Tiger Salamander
Ambystoma tigrinum
Tiger Salamander
The Tiger Salamander is found throughout the west in habitats that are wet.  This salamander was photographed in the Zuni Mountains here in New Mexico.  The adults are only seen during the rainy season of late summer.  They breed in stock ponds, lakes, reservoirs, mountain streams, etc.  The aquatic larval salamanders may take a year or more to mature.  As adults they spend most of their lives underground.  The larvae are often used as fishing bait and this has helped them spread to new areas.
