Trans-Pecos Rat Snake

Trans-pecos Ratsnake

Bogertophis subocularis

This snake is found chiefly in rocky areas of the Chihuahuan Desert.  It is active at night and can often be found by night-driving on remote desert roads.  It feeds chiefly on rodents which it kills through constriction.  As you can see in the photos, these two snakes were encountered at night on the road.   The location is the beautiful Big Bend National Park in Texas. (If you are a reptile lover you have to get to Big Bend!  I have spent many almost magical nights driving the roads of this park.)
