Digimon? What's that?

Remember the Tamagotchi craze a few years back? Digimon was also created at about the same time by Bandai as a virtual pet. The first Digimon (or Digital Monster) was Agumon in the hand-held game. Players could train their virtual pets and do battle with each other by linking their hand-helds together.

Digimon has come a long way from that hand-held virtual pet to it’s own Japanese animé series (third season about to show in Japan), several animated movies, Playstation games and even trading cards. This does not include the toys and other merchandise.

Storyline

The animated series start off at a summer camp when seven kids (known as the digidestines) are transported by these devices called digivices into the Digital World. There are actually 8 digidestines but one of them joins the team later on. Lost and alone, they are befriended by a group of small digital monsters, known as digimons. To the surprise of the digiestines, each one acquires a different digimon that acts as their protector and companion, guiding them through the Digital World. Later in the series, their digimon are able to evolve (digivolve) into more powerful digimon when they need to battle other digimons. However, once their power or energy has been exhausted, the digimon will devolve (de-digivolve) back to the original form. The kids later acquire individual crests that help their digimon evolve into even more powerful forms and show the owner's characteristic.

When is it shown?

It is telecasted every Sunday morning at 9 am on TCS 8. However, there are only two episodes left to the first season and I'm not sure whether TCS will bring in the second season. Apparently there was some talk that Kids Central will be showing the series again in English but it has yet to be confirmed.

Note: TCS 8 is currently repeating the first season on every Sunday morning at 9 am since 22 Apr 2001.

Who are the digidestines? (Chinese names in italics)

Taichi Kamiya (Tai-yi)

Courageous, outgoing, athletic and adventurous, Taichi is a born leader and is usually the first to jump into action. He may be a little rash and usually ends up in danger. However, he cares a lot for his teammates and can be depended on. He and Yamato don't get along very well due to personality clashes but they finally resolve their differences in the series.

Crest: Courage

Tidbits: He cares a lot for his sister, Kari, who joins the group later. He is the first so-called “goggles-boy”. (No link to Goggles of TCS 8 :) Seems that in every season there will be a boy who wears goggles.

Sora Takenouchi (Su-na)

Mature, levelheaded and sensible, Sora feels responisble for the others in her team. She is the strong female one and looks a bit like a tom-boy. She takes on the responsiblity of taking care of the team mates because she sometimes doubt that Taichi has the ability to do so.

Crest: Love

Tidbits: She seems to be interested in Taichi and luckily for her, the feeling seems to be mutual. There are several websites dedicated to this pair of young love-birds if you're interested.

Hikari Kamiya (Jia-er)

Hikari is Taichi's little sister and she's a nice and caring kid. She is the last to join the group and her Digimon, Gatomon, had to suffer in the hands of evil digimons as Hikari did not enter the Digital World with the original seven kids. The seven digidestines had to go back from the Digital World into our world and look for the eighth child in Japan, not knowing that Hikari was the chosen one. She's rather weak and nearly died in the series due to an illness.

Crest: Light

Tidbits: Taichi cares a lot for her and practically so does the whole group. She is one of the two digidestines who returns in the second series.
