Kiss on the stage and Conservatism in South Korea

Obnoxious behavior or Part of the art?

MKMF is one of the largest music festival in South Korea, which can be paralleled with AMA of the United States. MKMF gets a great deal of interests and attention from the public every year for the awarding ceremony and followed musical perfomances. In 2008, however, people's attention was not centered in the various awards for singers and the perfomances they presented but the kiss perfomance of TOP and Lee Hyo Lee, both of them the popular singers of Korea.

This so-called "Kiss perfomance" was happened during the special stage of Korean boy group Big Bang and representative dancing queen Lee Hyo Lee. Big Bang and Lee Hyo Lee prepared the special stage together, and under the name of "Scandelous", they presented an amazing perfomance together. Yet, after the perfomance, people only cared about the kiss of TOP, the rapper of Big Bang, and Lee Hyo Lee. Actually, the kiss was not a real kiss. In the middle of the perfomance, TOP approached to Hyo Lee and gave her a very brief and short kiss. Clearly, that was one of the carefully planned perfomances and there was no surprise in there.

Yet, the Korean newspapers and media focused on the kiss, since that kind of performance never happened between the top entertainers of South Korea. Actually, some of the newspapers blamed them for being obnoxious and not right. Considering that those kinds of perfomaces are freely held in foreign countries including the United States, this happening clearly showed the prevalent consevatism in South Korea.
