He and his wife Kautia have two sons, Michael and Griffin, and reside in Homosassa, Fla...Graduated from Crystal River (Fla.) High School in 1990...A two-time all-state selection in football and baseball, he went 10-3 with a 0.42 ERA in 14 games as a senior; he fanned 153 in 93 innings...A defensive back, he received a combined football and baseball scholarship offer from Florida State University, but signed with the Mariners, who selected him in the sixth round of the 1990 June draft...The University of Florida and Rutgers University also recruited him for football...Mike is an inductee in the Ted Williams Hitters Hall of Fame.

		Ranked among National League leaders in percent of ground balls induced (66.7%) and GDP/9 IP (1.03)...Finished the year on a strong note, going 12-2 in his last 16 starts...Went 4-1 with a 4.67 ERA in August and was 5-0, 2.62 in July...Mike allowed the third-most homers (15) on the team, but he allowed just five in his last 14 starts (86.1 IP)...Of his 86 runs allowed, 25 (29%) came in the first inning. Opponents hit .331 (40-for-121) off Mike in the first inning...His 14 career homers lead all active pitchers...Was on the losing end of Randy Johnson's perfect game on 5/18. Mike went the distance for his 20th career CG, allowing just two runs on eight hits in the historic contest...Was 0-5 for the first time in his career until winning on 5/23 vs. LA in a 5-1 Braves victory. Was also forced to skip his start vs. PHI on 9/6 due to a stiff neck. 2004 POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Division Series (Hou.): Started Game 2 in Houston, going 6.1 solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits before leaving the game with tightness in his left forearm...The only damage came on solo HRs by Jeff Bagwell in the first inning and Raul Chavez in the third...Appeared in relief in Game 4, gutting out a scoreless seventh inning to help the Braves tie the series with a 6-5 win in Atlanta.

	Became the first pitcher ever to win a Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger award in the same season... Allowed 2 or fewer ER in 18 of his 31 starts, including 9 of his last 11... Last 11 games, starting August 3: 6-3, 2.49, 72.1 IP, 20 ER... Went 11-3 with a 3.26 ERA (41 ER in 113.1 IP) over last 17 starts, from July 6 on; his 1st 14 games: 3-5, 4.70... He gave up both runs in the first inning, but rebounded to strike out the side in order to end the first and did so in the 2nd inning to become just the 4th pitcher in postseason history to strike out six straight hitters (1985- Todd Worrell, StL vs. KC; 1966- Moe Drabowski, Bal. vs. LA; 1919- Hod Eller, Cin. vs. Chi-A)...Went 1 x 2 at the plate...In Game 5, he got the loss in the 5-1 Cubs' clincher (6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K)...Mike gave up a leadoff HR to Alex Gonzalez in the 2nd inning and a two-run HR to Aramis Ramirez.
