I work as a Bouncer in one of the worst nightclubs in Colorado Springs. We have stabings, shootings and mostly fights on a nightly basis. I am also a member of the Guardian Angels safety patrol. As a bouncer I have come to realize that my fellow employees like face strikes rather than arm bars or take down techniques, this will get you in trouble fast. I found that doing research on the net or library will help greatly in finding the right art's to stop an attacker without hurting yourself or the attacker.

"The Side Kick Fade"-- Keith Gordon Shisho "Silver Dragon"

"The Side Kick Fade"-The side kick fade is a great counter move there are a couple ways you can throw it if an opponet blitz's you you skip back in a straight line so your opponet picks up speed and it seems to him your retreating and then the side kick launches him. So your really throwing the side kick forward as your body is going back and your opponet is chasing you. Experiment with it I've done very well with this.

For right hook, step in as soon as they move, block with left forearm(pulling attackers wrist away and down), at the same time thrust to solarplexus, step back and pull em' off balance hitting one knuckle punch to st9(that artery in the side of the neck and shuto to nape of neck(gb10 i think) at the same. This should be done fluidly but very fast.

Another one: If an attacker grabs you with one or two arms, lock his hand to your shoulder(chest, whatever he's grabbing) and step back while using either a palm or an open hand to push his face up. By doing this you take the attacker off balance and you could hit em' in the neck or follow through with the backward step and throw the attacker down, the rest is up to your imagination.

When an eager opponent comes in at you hard with his right fist reared for a hook to the head, quickly step in right foot first so you are close to his body and facing his right arm. As you do this, grab his right arm as he is throwing the punch with your left arm, and bring your right arm over for an elbow to the side of his head. Then, you can do a variety of take downs such as: continue holding his right arm with your left arm as you duck under his arm, thus coming up from behind him and bringing his right arm into a chickenwing position. From there, you can switch arms so your right arm his holding his right arm, and then take your free left arm and bring it across his neck, thus choking him. Or, after you initially block his right arm, while holding his arm with your left hand, take your right arm across the front of his neck, and bring him down as you kick out his legs from behind. Good street fighting technique against less skilled opponents who rush in with a right hook!

A Self Defense Tip--Timothy J. Lazier

Be careful with the strike first policy in confrontations. If you are attacked by some one intent on comitting a crime and you strike them first this is legal self defense. But in just about any state if a person (especially a man) is in a verbal confrontation with some one who is trying to pick a fight with them and they strike first that is assault.

If they hit and do bodily harm this is assault and battery and if they continue the attack it is aggravated assault. Many states are hard on trained martial artists who comit assault. So if some one tries to pick a fight walk away or if you can't wait untill they make the first move.

If they make the first move you're just defending yourself and are legally in the right. So consider the circumstances before you strike first and strike hard.

Fighting Tip--Tom A Bailey

Your opponent throws a right fist at you(either a rear cross or a sraight.) Step out and forward 90 degrees with a left hand block hitting the outside of the opponents arm inwards, slide your left hand down into a lower backfist to the bottem of the ribs and then back around to the chin followed by a right lead jab or finger jab to the throat.

Fighting Tip--Matt (call me Crash)

Ok, when in a bout let it be sparing in a tournament or even a grudge it is always important to use swift and clean attacks. Remember the more speed the better, strength is important to but in a way speed is more. Attack first and be hard about it, don't use too much energy on your first attack or you'll tire out. Just attack quickly with a really fast punch and combinations, it has never failed me, but don't let your guard down or take your eyes off of your opponent.

Fighting Tip--Timothy J Lazier

When engaging an opponent in either a competitive match or a defensive encounter do not use high kicks as lead off attacks. In a competition you will most likely be facing an opponent of skill who can counter such kicks. Even more important in a defensive encounter you do not know the skill of your opponent and could face serious injury by throwing a high kick that leaves you open to counter attack.

Instead of high kicks use low kicks to the legs, groin and pelvic area to put the opponent off balance. If you then wish to use a high kick you can employ it against an opponent less capable of countering your attack. Another option is to use high kicks in counter strikes after evading an opponent's attack. This second option is most useful in competitions where kicks to the legs and below the belt are against the rules.

VISUALISATION FOR TRAINING--Garry Wasson

Visualisation can be used for training proposes to improve your skills. When you are taught a new technique or want to improve a skill, stop for a while and run it through your head, how you want the skill to look, working on the clarity and control of the images.

Visualisation combined with physical training leads to more efficient development of skills than physical training alone.

When shadow boxing or using the punching bag, don't just throw punches and kicks but imagine there's an opponent in front of you.

In a fight or contest you will go through different physical and mental demands.

You may have to be aggressive, counter punch or hit and move. So why not do this on the punching bag.

AGGRESSIVE

Imagine your opponent is on the back foot retreating and you are punching HARD and FAST.

COUNTER PUNCH

Visualise your opponent is throwing a single punch or kick, evade or block it then throw a three punch combination.

HIT AND MOVE

This time you are ahead on points and your opponent is trying to knock you out. Use your footwork to hit and move around the punching bag moving out of the way of his or hers punches and kicks and working to attack on different angles with speed techniques.

Work on making your visualisation training as realistic as possiable, this will add other dimension to your training.

Self defense against a tackle--Brian Bonilla

The best way to defend against an attacker who is about to tackle you is to use your knees to make them stand upright, then as soon as they straighten up to grab their face out of pain, try kicking them at the knees to bring them down.

Self defense move--David Davis

I will tell this move as if you are right handed; if you are left handed transpose it. First fake a right hook to the head then on your left leg pivot throw your right leg over your hip swinging it like a bat aim to the outside of your opponent's knee kicking with your shin the effect breaking your opponent's leg. This is a very painful move so don't use it unless you plan to hurt him.

1 As the opp strikes with his right fist, step to 12:00 with your right foot and double forearm strike to the inside of his arm
2 Next right forearm strike his neck as the left hand checks
3 Left vertical punch to his lung point
4 Left foot now steps to 10:00 as...
4 Right hand claws across his face vertically
5 Right kick to the inside of his right knee or groin and stand on guard

Self Defence Tip--Michael Walker

When an opponent, a REAL opponent, comes in, they usualy have their fist rared back for a hook to the nose or jaw. This leaves that side wide open.
Duck down to the side of the exposed ribs and hit them in the kidney. That will hurt, then, go for the solar plexus.

If worst comes to worst, sweep them and stand on their throat until they have passed out, then jump off.

Sparring tip--James White

When I fight and an oppponent blitzs in on you be in a right side forward stance and take your back leg and step over in front angle and do a spinning hook round kick off to an angle great kick works every time!

Sparring tip--Sam Ives

To get a quick point you can do this. Off stance your back leg behind you. Act like your going to bring your foot around and mid way through reverse punch. It's never expected.

The easiest way to get a jumping back kick is by faking a spinning roundhouse and when the person steps back you step up and nail him in his stomach

Tournament Tips--S.Ryan

When in a tournament its just you and your opponent, the crowd watching the referee looking on, your instructor looking on, all your clubmates, friends and family watching what goes through your head what goes through your opponents head, the fight is about to start, the ref raises his hand what do you do, freeze and wait for what ever happens happens.
Remember the opponent is just as scared as you maybe even more so he/she could be better at hiding it than you don't try to hide it breath deep, focus, look right into your opponents eyes, don't look around you ever during the fight.
It's "just you and me," all around the ring should be just a blur of distant activity, you can only see and hear inside the ring ,your little inner circle,just as if you were doing your form ,outside distractions don concern you if your opponent is too quick, for you don't worry what you do is throw feint attacks your opponent will use their speed to try and catch you, then you strike like lightning.!
Constantly change your forms of attack and combinations concentrate, stay within your inner circle,you shouldn't be able to see mammy in the crowd,just you and the opponent if you can achieve this you will have the mindset of a champion you will learn new tricks .This type of concentration can be achieved by anyone no matter who you are.
