Julie Codega

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Julie Codega, I’m 22 from Queensland.  My home track is Logan City BMX Academy which is run by a group of riders and is an awesome track! I work as an Administration Officer for Queensland Health and have been doing some studying part time.

What type of bike do you ride?

GT Team Series – looking at getting a new bike soon.

Who are your sponsors?

Phirebird Raceways, Cycle Scene

How did you get involved in BMX and how long have you been racing?  How long do you think you will keep racing?

Both my brothers raced when I was 5 and I got bored watching them ride around the track so I got on a bike and started racing myself.  I didn’t think I would still be racing 17 years later.

I’m having a break at the moment but I'll be back on the bike soon and I guess I'll just see what happens.

What major results and achievements have you had?

World 3rd, 6th, 8th

ABA World Cup – 4th, 7th

Australian Champion x 5

Australian Junior Elite 2nd X 2

Level 1 Accredited Coach

What has been your most memorable moment/s in BMX?

Probably winning my first Australian titles and then winning for the 5th time and I was also part of the QLD team and GT team that also won – that was cool.

What has been your biggest disappointment in BMX?

No disappointments – maybe not training enough at times.

Who would you say is/has been your toughest competitor?

Everyone is tough now, all the young guns are coming through and they are fast!!

What are your future goals/ambitions?  Is there anything that you haven’t achieved yet, but would like to?

The ultimate would have to be a goal medal at the Olympics, but would like to make it to the final at the worlds in the Elite class.

What do you like most about BMX?

It’s a fun sport and the people in BMX, it’s always good to catch up with everyone and have a chat or a drink or go Go-karting or something.

What do you least like about BMX?

The long days at the track, I wish racing was run a lot quicker.

What states have you raced in in Australia?

I’ve managed to travel to all the states with BMX.

What is your favourite race meeting to attend and why?

Nerang is always good in January and I also love the Aussies.

How do you think more females could be encouraged to start racing BMX?  How do you think the females that are already involved in BMX could be encouraged to stay in the sport?

I think maybe more exposure with BMX in both instances.  There is a lot more exposure now with both this website and BMXpress which is great and the more of it the better.

Did you look up to anybody when you were younger?  If so, who and why?  Is there anybody these days that you look up to and admire?

Tai-Lee Muxlow – she was awesome, she could jump, she could beat the boys and she had style!!

Did you used to beat the boys at club meetings?  How did they handle this?

When I was younger I did – they didn’t like it too much and didn’t want to talk about it, but after a few years they were back beating me again so they forgot all about the old times.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of BMX?  What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to hang out with my friends, watching bands play and travelling.

What is your favourite music to listen to?

I like a whole range of music like Grinspoon, Incubus, No Doubt, Chemical Brothers, Supreme Being of Leisure, Buddha Bar and then funky techno music at clubs.

Do you have a favourite TV show?

Can't go pass Seinfield, Rove and Alias – she kicks butt!!

Do you have any words of wisdom for the younger riders?

Enjoy riding your bike and with it will come success.

This is the thank you part, so fire away.

Thanks to my brother Glenn and Phirebird Raceways (Mel) for all their support and advice, to my Mum and Dad for all the years they have supported me and helped me travel around Australia.  And to all the people in BMX that make it great – THANKS!
