A Hunting We Will Go

ARKANSAS JACK RUSSELL TERRIER PLAY DAY

This weekend, April 25th Sidedish and myself went to our first play day trial in Jacksonville Arkansas. A nice lady named Leanne Winters gave Mom and Dad directions and we drove right to it. Oh by the way, for all you Yankee dogs out there, Jacksonville is about a hop, skip and a jump north of Little Rock.

It was located on Susie Colclasure's farm and we got to see all kinds of new critters including this mammoth turkey who Sidedish and myself were determined to whip into submission. On closer inspection this bird was something out of Jurrasic Park and we decided to let sleeping dogs..uh turkeys lie.
The club members were extremely helpful and outgoing and they just made us feel right at home. Being our first time out, we had absolutely no idea what was happening but they worked with us and gave us helpful hints and guess what, they had all sorts of critters to chase. That's right up our alley.

We allowed ourselves to be entered in two events. Racing and Go-To-Ground.

Racing

Now racing is perhaps the most exciting to us and to the humans. There are two types, flat and hurdles. We ran in the flat race. The tract is at least 150 feet long, although after running it, it seemed like a football field. Mom stuffed us in a starting box, not unlike the horse racing that we watch periodically on TV. Never having been stuffed in a box before, I was a bit concerned but my major problem was this sock they stuck on my nose. I heard others calling it a muzzle and believe me it lives up to its name. Being a civilized JR, I saw no reason to wear this and spent the better part of the first part of the race after being released from the box on getting it off. The others were busy chasing a tail on a string (I knew all along it wasn't real) but Mom kept calling me and urging me to jump through a hole in some hay bales so I took off. Later they gave me a third place ribbon. Heck, if I'd have known there were prizes things might have been different.

Go-To-Ground

Now this go-to-ground thing is something else. All the critters that I have ever rounded up were loose in our barn. No tunnels, I just spot them and the race is on, but Mom picked me up and stuffed me in this tunnel. Well I wasn't sure just what I'd done, so I just sat there till she uncovered the hole and came back out. Everyone laughed at me, but I had no idea what they wanted. Then this nice man showed me a big, ugly, white nasty rat. Welllll.........this was a different story. A reason to go into the tunnel. They gave all us novice guys a second chance and this time I was ready. I slipped through the tunnel and tried to grab that nasty beast. Now the mice and rats in our barns aren't protected by a strong, silver set of armour that this here rat was wearing and I was disappointed that I couldn't teach him a thing or two.

This is a picture of myself and Sidedish getting ready for our run. As usual I am all business and Sidedish is worried about how she'll look on film.

And this is Sidedish protecting Dad from that evil Turkey that was the size of Godzilla and twice as mean.
