At Geocities

So you know you want to create a homepage but don't want to pay for one, but still want quality. I know just the place. Geocities! They offer 3 megs of disk space for free and a ton of utilities to help you on your way. This page will explain them to you, and help you find your way around Geocities.

Note: The page for nieghborhoods will open in a new window. DON'T close it after you have chosen a neighborhood, I will walk you through the whole thing.
  • Step One - Pick a neighborhood. Make sure you fit into the theme. This is helpful because fitting in will help you get more hits. Geocities is broken up into neighborhoods so that visitors can navigate more easily.
  • Step Two - Find a Vacancy. You can do this by going to the neighborhood you chose and click on the "join this neighborhood" button. It will be in the bar towards the top of the page. Once you do that, you will be taken to a page that list the vacancies, click on the address you want and then find it within the block, then click on it again. It sounds confusing but you will see what I mean as you go.
  • Step Three - Ok, you clicked the little house, and now you are at a sign up page. Make sure to read the Content Guidelines and don't agree even if you don't intend to follow them. Pages are checked on my Community Leaders and they will eventually find out that you aren't following the guidelines. Once you have read them through make sure you have clicked the radio button next to Free Homepage, at the top of the page, and then click "I agree".
  • Step Four - Now you are at an application. Just fill in everything you need to fill in and submit it. MAKE SURE TO ENTER THE CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS. This is very important. Double check it, triple check it, just make sure it is correct. If it isn't you will not recieve your password, and it just gets totally screwy after that! Also, sometimes the membername you chose is already taken, don't worry about it, just choose another one. Keep in mind, Geocities serves over 2 million people, so the name you chose, no matter how unique may have also been someone elses pick.
  • Step Five - Wait! Now that you have submitted your application, you will need to wait a few minutes depending on your mail service, for the email with your password. Once you get that, you are on your way to a Homepage. Go to Profile Editor and change your password to something you will remember.
  • Now go to File Manager and begin your homepage. Here you will find things like the EZUpload, all of your files, a counter manager, a Geoguide Manager, and the Move to another address utility. You will want to use all of these (except maybe the move utility) at one time or another. Counters are a useful little thing to have. Geoguides are nice as well, in the fact that they allow you the opportunity to advertise your page on others pages. You can get a Guestbook for your page. It is totally customizable, as well as simple to add to your pages. Now that you are in Geocities you can choose to have a free email account.
  • Now you are ready to start your homepage. I have some helpful links and hints to get you on your way. Click here to begin your journey.
  • Once you set up your page, and it is in the correct neighborhood, go look at your neighborhood page. There are probably committees that offer membership and fun things to do, as well as offer another way to promote your page.

Good Luck!
