"Seems
like just yesterday these were a coupla grand...(sigh)!!"
-(Onsale's) CEO, Jerry Kaplan -- formerly founder
of GO Corp. -- does:
If you recognize this quote, you probably know
about ONSALE.
NOTE: The purpose of this page is not to put down ONSALE. I'm a satisified customer and purchased several items including my refurbished T100X. Although lately, I think their prices are becoming inflated, but that's another story.

(a) Protective case - (b) T100X (c) Parallel port adapter, about 2 feet. (d) Set of manuals (not shown) (e) soft cloth case for the extra battery -- I think the battery inside (f) Multi-charger which charges more than one battery at a time -. (Thanks, Glenn for this info) (g) AC power supply pack (h) Stylus -- batteries included |

Type: Pen
based Memory: 4 MB RAM - exandable to 20MB |
Toshiba memory cards are expensive. Search the news group, comp.sys.pen, there was some discussions about compatibility problems. |
Hard Drive Size: 40 MB / 18ms | 40 MB is pretty small. The drive is slooooow.
Windows for Pen takes up about half of it. You can double-space it to get about 20MB more. There is a performance trade-off. |
Processor: AM386 SXLV - 25Mhz386/25 | No comment. |
Screen - Transreflective backlit
LCD "640 x 480 9.5" Diagonal / 64 grey scale |
The screen isn't bad, but it isn't perfect either. You have the option to turn off the back lighting to conserve energy. This feature is also useful when you are outdoors on a sunny day. The software allows you to have the screen rotated 90 degrees. You'll find the default setting better. You will also notice that the upper right hand corner of the screen gets dark. This is due to the heat generated by the battery. Just crank up the brightness and contrast if this bothers you. |
Digitizer - 200pt/sec | You'll probably use your keyboard if you plan to do a lot of data entry. I tend to use the provided on-screen virtual keyboard program often since the handwriting recognition software is slow and picky. The digitizer works with the battery operated pen. Can somebody tell me the average life of the pen batteries under moderate use (one hour a day)? |
Architecture: 32 bit | I heard some people are having problems running Win32 apps. Toshiba recommends that you don't run Win95. It is probably too slow for acceptable performance. |
Serial port | You'll use this to load your first programs if you don't have a floppy drive. I have an article how to get started withour a floppy. |
Battery life: 1.5 - 2hrs per pack / NiMH | 1.5 to 2 hours my a**! This claim is outrageous. You will receive two
batteries. Each batteries last about 20-30 minutes under normal use. The
trickle discharge rate is high. My spare battery can go from 100% to 20%
capacity in two days without even using it. Next to the slow disk drive,
this is probably the number one complaint from T100X owners.
You can monitor battery charge two ways: (1) MaxTime software which is provided or (2) a LED indicator located at the top flap. Green means fully charge, amber means it is running low. Blinking light says "charge me!". |
Floppy Drive: Optional 1.44 external (not included) |
I believe the market price is about $250. Used ones are probably
going for $200. Not worth it. You don't need this if you have another PC.
Simply use DOS interlnk program to share floppy drive and CD-ROM
resources from another PC.
I'm trying to make one out of old parts. Stay tuned. |
Keyboard: Standard PS/2 connector for optional keyboard (not included) |
You'll be needing one of these if you plan to do a lot of data entry. If you don't have a PS/2 type keyboard, you can pick up an adapter for under $5. I picked up a slick small black keyboard for mine for $30. |
Software Included: Windows for Pen | Software is pre-installed. I did not get any floppies. Make a back-up early. |
Weight 3.3 lbs | Pretty light in weight. |
Complete with battery, power supply, pen, and Pen for Windows software. |
|
You will also get a parallel port adapter.
Two PCMCIA Type II Slots are provided
Manuals are listed below. Toshiba probably hired a junior engineer
grunt to copy and bind these manuals.

Shipping
I got mine delievered about one and a half weeks. It was shipped in a 2' x 1.5' x 1' box via UPS 2nd day shipping. The shipper's address on the box:
ADISTRA
36445 Van Borne Road
Romulus, MI, 48174
That's intersting. I believe their phone number is (313) 414-2600. I didn't verify this but I did get this from telephone information 411. I believe this is Adistra's home page, which implies that they are simply a distributor and fulfillment company working with Onsale.
Okay, I better stop researching the trival things and focus on the technical aspects of the T100X!
Here is their warranty claim:

Whatever! I have a hunch that if this machine ever croaks, it's probably cheaper to just buy another one or trash it.
Don't forget: as with most ONSALE products, it's REFURBISHED!
