Sailing Ships Archive

Welcome to Sailing Ships Archive! I created this page because I love sailing ships, and there were too few good sites containing information on ships and their history. There are pages on events, eras, or legends, but no ship guides. I changed this. Sailing Ships Archive is here to meet all your information needs on ships from 1480-1815.

Ship's News

Due to the massive questions I get about very minute details, I ask that if you e-mail me, make it simple and please not too many questions. I am only a university student with a passion and little time. No geneology questions, I ask that if you are looking for a small merchant ship that transported your familiy to the new world, please consult Lloyds of London arcives or the port of arrival's archives. Also, do not ask me anything about ships post 1830 because all the books I have bought over the years really don't cover clipper ships. Although, the sailing fleet of 2002 is fine.

Just a small note: My page only covers ships from 1490-1815. This is my time period of interest. Don't ask me why, but I do not like the designs of sailing ships beyond the early years of the nineteenth century. This page is dedicated to the sailing ships that made the first explorations to the last ships used in the Napoleonic Wars. There are some exceptions, though. There are a few ships that will be from peiods before 1480.

A point of interest: A comparative essay on ancient Roman Quinqueremes and Athenian Triremes.

A point of interest: A diagnostic essay on the tactics of the Seven Year's War in North America (1756-1763).

Tactics

My vacation: During the summer of 1999, I took a trip to the U.S. onboard the sail training vessel St Lawrence II. I have written down the details of life under sail.

Life Under Sail

Updates: March 21, 2002. I have asked that people with questions tone them down a bit. I do not have much time now that I am in university, and half my books are at home. Plus, my internet here is slow so response time may vary. I will answer questions about ship types in general, but I may not have time to look through my books or rack my brain for answers to more specific questions like 'what way did the grain face on my great grandfather's ship's quarterdeck.'
