Florence, in the middle of Italy's boot, is a city with a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks of the river Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas. The city's urban structure has evolved from the historical centre characterized by roads of Roman origin, in successive concentric expansions demarcated by surrounding walls (12th and 14th centuries). Expansion beyond the walls started in the second half of last century, partly the result of building the railway stations, though it rose to considerable proportions in the 1950's owing to the increase in population and the city's economic importance. Today Florence stretches towards Prato to the northeast and Siena to the south. It is a town which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science. On the little streets, shops gleam with fruit, vegetables, wine; craftsmen work in the old ways in wood, gold and leather. The city has retained an extraordinary wealth of art treasures, a glorious witness to its centuries of civilization. In Florence - the city of Dante - the Italian language was born. It's estimated by UNESCO, that 60% of the world's most important works of art are located in Italy and approximately half of these are in Florence.
