OVERALL OPINION
This is just the start of their working relationship, let alone any sort of friendship/deeper relationship. There is a lot of sarcasm on Jack's part, but he's trying to test her out, see if she's worthy of being on his team. By the end of the episode he's started to soften to her somewhat. A good start.
NOTABLE SCENES
1) First Meeting: The first time Sam and Jack meet at the SGC shows them as somewhat antagonistic. Jack doesn't want this scientist on his team, so Sam decides to prove herself. She recites her record for him in an attempt to impress him. The last thing she says to him before they are interrupted to continue the meeting is, "Or are we going to have to arm wrestle?" With this line she gets an interesting look from Jack, as if to say to her 'whenever you're ready'. Despite the antagonistic words of this scene, there are definitely sparks flying between these two. They seem so focused on each other that everyone could have left the room and they probably wouldn't have noticed. Still in the meeting scene, when Jack refers to Samuels as "Mr. Glass-is-half-empty", she smiles. This is the first sign of her appreciating his sense of humour. At the end of this scene, they share a look before either leaves the briefing room.
2) First Mission: Sam is still eager to please as they get ready to go to Abydos. Jack is keeping his guard up somewhat still. Yet, even with his continued antagonism toward her, the next couple of lines from this scene are telling to any shipper.
Sam: You know you really will like me when you get to know me.
Jack: Oh, I adore you already, captain.
Sure he says it sarcastically, but it doesn't mean he's not entirely sincere. [g]
3) Abydos: Once they're through to the planet, he pats her on the shoulder, teasing her because she didn't go through the 'gate as well as she thought she would. A little later on when she's looking at the DHD with such enthusiasm, he rolls his eyes. When she introduces herself as "Doctor Samantha Carter" to Daniel, Jack reminds her that she had told him to refer to her as "Captain". She gives him the beginnings of one of her killer looks. Further along, she's sitting next to him as they eat dinner. She laughs her butt off with the rest of the group as Jack chokes on Skaara's moonshine. To me this shows that despite his earlier sarcasm and attempts to put her off, she's not about to give up on him, or be intimidated by him. Just before they leave to go to the chamber, Sha're kisses Daniel. As the kiss finishes off, Jack looks quickly back at Sam who's grinning self-consciously as the others around are hooting. Once they're in the chamber, Jack actually seems to really listen to her as she's talking. Starting to show some interest?
4) Infirmary: Ferretti has just woken up and everyone rushes there. Sam informs Jack that Ferretti has already started to input the symbols and Jack comes to stand behind her for the rest of the scene.
5) Chulak: They've gone through to the coordinates Ferretti gave them. Sam informs Jack that she's put claymores on the ridge. He sarcastically comments to Kawalsky that that should be enough, doesn't he think? As he walks away and Kawalsky responds, Sam sends a look of daggers in both their directions. Jack is trying to be one of the guys here. Covering up for actually starting to be impressed with her work?
6) Meeting Monks: When they meet up with the monks, the whole time Sam doesn't say much of anything, but she's watching Jack the entire time.
7) Banquet: They're brought to Chulak and enter the banquet room. Sam and Jack share a look. As they sit down, they sit rather close together at the end of the table. Daniel certainly doesn't sit that close to Jack and he's on the other side of him!
8) The Children Of The Gods: During the choosing, when they take Skaara, Jack gets knocked down when he tries to stop them. Sam is the first to support/help him.
9) Escape: They've gotten the refugees out of the prison and are on their way back to the 'gate when they come under attack. Sam yells at Jack that they're sitting ducks. Surprisingly Jack doesn't get angry with her for being a little insubordinate with him.
10) Back Home: They've defeated the guards and have returned to Earth with the refugees. When Hammond asks Jack what they're up to, Sam answers for him. He doesn't seem in the least bothered by her doing this.
