OVERALL OPINION "The Enemy Within" is really more of an exercise in imagination, as far as the shipper is concerned. Sam and Jack have only recently met, and in this episode Sam works more with Daniel, her fellow scientist. Jack, meanwhile, is more concerned with the fate of his friend than with flirting, subliminally or not.

NOTABLE SCENES

1) The Iris: Jack, Daniel, Sam, Kawalsky, and Hammond measure the effectiveness of the iris from the control room. As the scene begins, Sam stands a little ahead of Daniel and Jack as they discuss whether the Goa'uld are sending people through the gate. She turns to face Jack as he points out that hitting the iris would be "like bugs on a windshield." The next time we see her, she's standing between Jack and Daniel. Though I realize this probably has more to do with the cuts in filming, the really devoted shipper might argue that she's irresistibly drawn to stand beside Jack. [g] After Kawalsky leaves, Daniel asks "So this iris is going to hold, right?" Once Sam has given her technical explanation, O'Neill responds, "So this iris is going to hold, right?" She shakes off the sarcasm philosophically by pointing out that if it doesn't, the self-destruct sequence will leave them with no worries. Carter responds to Jack's "Ah, I feel much better," with just raised eyebrows.

2) Captive: Sam has discovered Kawalsky's attempt to activate the Stargate; she calls an alert, and just after Charlie grabs her, Jack rushes in; soon after, members of SGC open the elevator doors to discover Kawalsky over Sam's body. Some very nice reaction shots here, as Sam is horrified by the Goa'uld voice that demands, from Kawalsky's mouth, "Help me," and as Jack sees him holding Sam as prisoner. Of course, Jack's reaction would undoubtedly have been similar if Sam had not been Charlie's prisoner: this is Kawalsky's first violent attack, as far as they know. As Kawalsky drags Carter down the corridor with him, Jack warns off the other soldiers. Once the elevator has stopped, O'Neill pushes his way through the half-opened doors. His look, as he sees Charlie crouched at Sam's side, is confused and angry; he drags Kawalsky away from Sam, shouting, "Charlie, what the hell is going on?" As Kawalsky--back to himself--points out that Carter needs to be taken to the infirmary, Jack looks really confused.

3) Briefing: A briefing on the Kawalsky situation, at which SG1, Col. Kennedy, Dr. Warner, and General Hammond are present. The shippiest scene in the episode is too easy to miss. Everybody rises as Hammond enters the room, and the general orders them to be seated. As they sit, Jack puts a hand on Sam's arm as she sits down next to him. She smiles in acknowledgment of the gesture. In another amusing note, both Sam and Jack have their hands folded in the same way. Perhaps it is a standard briefing posture [g]. As the briefing progresses, Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c share Jack's hostility towards Col. Kennedy's suggestions. Then, (yeah!) as Hammond tells Kennedy to go to hell, the reaction shot shows both Sam and Jack biting back smiles.
