OVERALL OPINION
When I first saw this episode, I almost thought they had killed Daniel off for sure! Other than being relieved that the anthropologist really wasn't dead, it was nice to see the soothe/comfort bits between Sam and Jack. It's not the shippiest episode, but it has its warm-fuzzy moments.
NOTABLE SCENES
1) The Return: On their way back from the planet, Sam, Jack, and Teal'c are stammering down the grating, notably shaken and dripping wet. Jack has both hands on Sam, one with a fistful of fabric off of her shoulder and the other on her back. Teal'c is slightly distanced from the two, Sam keeping him near with a hand on his jacket. When all three make it to the end of the grating, Jack helps her sit down before dropping himself. They're supporting each other.
2) The Funeral Scene: While Jack is presenting Teal'c with the flag, Sam's eyes are on him, searching his face. He doesn't make eye contact with her, but it's easy to infer that her heart is breaking as she watches the emotions wash over his face. After Jack salutes the flag and Teal'c, she looks forward again, taking a step forward to Jack's side. Slowly marching up to the grating, the both reach for the wreath, making brief eye contact, but look quickly away. Upon putting the wreath into the even horizon, their arms lower to their sides again, and Sam's right and Jack's left hand are so close they almost touch. They both delay-salute as the wreath sinks into the wormhole. Arms lowered again, they brush, and maybe I'm not the only one who would like to have seen a reassuring hand squeeze if the event hadn't been so formal.
3) The Wake: At Daniel's wake when Sam arrives with Teal'c, Jack offers them something to drink. Almost eager to imbibe to relieve her pain, Sam graciously accepts a beer. Jack pours it for her, but has a sudden flashback as he watches the head form. The glass runs over and Sam looks on in concern, her mouth opening as if to say something. Agitated, Jack walks quickly outside. Perplexed, Sam and Teal'c share a glance. She's just as shocked when Jack 'high sticks' the General's sedan, taking a few steps forward but pauses when the General confronts him. Sam's not sure what she should do to help him. His violence has shocked her.
4) Cleaning Out Daniel's Apartment: Sam is watching Daniel's fish skirt around the tank, and her eyes scan over the filter bubbling oxygen into the water. She suddenly has a flashback of Daniel screaming for help and quickly backs away into Jack's awaiting arms. He holds her by the elbows, asking her in a soft voice if she is all right. She tells him about the visions, and the bubbles, everything suddenly becoming clearer when Jack tells her he's had the same dreams. Teal'c agrees. It's a nice scene showing Jack softening around the edges when it comes to Sam.
5) The Phantom Daniel: Janet is explaining a strange formation found on all of their cortexes when the klaxons sound and the three race off for the embarkation room. A fatigue-clothed man stepped out and reaches to remove his Kevlar helmet, transfixing SG1 when they think it is Daniel. It looks like Daniel; the same build, dark glasses and hair, but it's simply a member of SG6. Janet questions them, wondering why they ran off. As Jack explains, they know he's gone, but they also know he's alive. When he offers to Hammond that they have to go back, Jack is immediately struck with a slicing pain through his head and doubles over. Sam is at his side in an instant, one hand across his back as the other smoothes over his arm. She assists the orderly in taking O'Neill to the infirmary. Sam has mothering instincts after all!
6) Bark Like A Chicken, Cluck Like A Dog: Sam elects herself for hypnosis. Jack is sitting behind her the entire time; arms either crossed over his chest or a lifted hand to his face to wash over his eyes. MacKenzie is able to pull the first turn of events from her subconscious. Something bubbles from the salt water before them, depositing a very squid-like humanoid on the sand. Bending over he etches a few symbols in the sand and Daniel replies in kind, saying that it's cuneiform. In a violent rage, the creature knocks them unconscious with an unseen energy pulse. With further prodding, Sam remembers the contraption they were placed in, the brainwashing evident. So frightened Sam jumps from the chair, snapping out of hypnosis. Jack spins her around, shaking her from the delirium, finally enveloping her in a strong embrace when Sam tells him they've left Daniel behind. He holds her close, comforting her with a hand around her waist and shoulders as he rocks her side to side. Jack vows to her that they're going back, his hand smoothing over her hair, and presses his face close to her neck. It is sweet how he comforts her even in front of MacKenzie.
7) Daniel's Back: Soaking wet but in one piece, Daniel doesn't know where to begin. Giving up, he simply says it's a long story. Sam agrees with him, and Jack merely quips "tell us about it over sushi." Sam smiles and starts to giggle, looking away as she bites her lip. Jack's smile broadens in response; clearly pleased with himself that he was both able to make Sam giggle and Daniel smile.
