OVERALL OPINION This is probably one of the most angsty episodes of the first season, because of Jack's reactions while Sam is down in the bunker with Cassie. There are a few shippy moments when they're together, such as the scene with the dog, but the real shippiness I think, is in Jack's agony at being separated from Sam just when she's in trouble.

NOTABLE SCENES

1) Telescopes: It starts in the gateroom, as SG1 is preparing to join SG7 to observe a black hole during a solar eclipse. Daniel and Sam are discussing the phenomena when Jack mentions its called an accretion disc. Daniel is amazed at Jack's knowledge of astronomy. Sam isn't however, as she already knows about his hobby. Obviously Sam knows more about Jack than Daniel does. Although Daniel and Teal'c know Jack has a telescope, only Sam knows what he uses it for. Obviously she's made a few trips to his house alone! As she points out to Daniel, "You didn't think the Colonel had a telescope on the roof to watch the neighbours, did you?" and she and Jack share a quick glance at each other.

2) Not Staying: Later on, when Sam points out that someone should stay and watch the eclipse, Cassie comes in and clutches Sam's arm. She exchanges startled looks with Jack. "Well, you won't be staying." Jack says. He's obviously not happy about this, he must have wanted Sam to stay with him on the planet.

3) Heading Down: When they go to the nuclear facility to take Cassie underground, once there, Jack offers to take Cassie, but Sam refuses. Jack clearly doesn't like this, but chooses to respect her wishes. Instead, he makes it clear that Sam has only a few minutes to go down to the bottom, leave Cassie, and come back up. Sam nods, and steps into the lift. Jack and Sam stare at each other as the lift doors close, Jack looking more worried than we've ever seen him.

4) Staying Down: When Sam goes back down again, and Daniel points out that she's going back down, "The hell she is." Jack says, and gets on the intercom to order her back up, first calling her Captain Carter, and then Sam. He desperately tries to order her back up, but he knows she'll refuse. Jack looks at his watch. There is only a minute to go. He suggests Daniel and Teal'c leave, although he makes no move to leave, and is obviously staying to the very end. He makes no suggestion that he should leave, although as he's suggesting the others leave, he obviously thinks its very dangerous to stay where he is. Daniel and Teal'c refuse. Jack nods his head, as if he's not surprised.

5) Count Down: He moves to the intercom, as if he wants to say something to Sam, but stops himself. The final ten seconds count down. Jack braces himself, but nothing happens. Jack lunges for the intercom, and calls out, "Captain Carter, can you hear me." Nothing. Then he calls out, softer, and more urgently. "Sam can you hear me." She answers, "We're okay. Nothing happened." Jack is obviously extremely relieved, and shows his emotions for once. He asks Sam what happened. She gives a scientific explanation, but in the end admits she 'just knew'. Jack is slightly fazed by this, but holds back from his usual sarcasm. He's just too relieved she's ok to argue with her.

6) In The Park: When Jack gives Cassie the dog, Cassie bounds happily up to Sam with it, saying, "Look at my dog!", "Your dog?" Sam replies, looking up at Jack, who smiles at her, rather sheepishly. He seems pleased to have done something that pleased Carter, but slightly embarrassed by the way she smiles at him. This is one of the few times we see them off duty though, and they're obviously very relaxed in each other's company, suggesting they spend quite a lot of time together off base. He then sees (although Sam doesn't say anything!) that Sam and Cassie would like some private time together, so he carries the dog off, and takes Daniel and Teal'c with him. Another example of him knowing what she wants without her saying a word.
