The episode begins with an activating Stargate and Technician Davis announcing "unscheduled traveller", causing alarms to sound and for SF guards to flood the embarkation room. As General Hammond and Jack O'Neill enter the control room, the General asks if they've received an iris code. Davis replies that they have, and that it's SG1's. O'Neill promptly turns the rest of his arriving team-mates and quips "Hi, how are you?". General Hammond muses that the only else with SG1's code and a transmitter is Master Bra'tac and as the rest of the team wonders what Master Bra'tac could want, the order is given for the iris to be opened. As Bra'tac arrives, he asks permission to enter Hammond's compound. Hammond, naturally, agrees and order for the guards to stand down. He and SG1 quickly move down to greet Bra'tac. In the embarkation room, Bra'tac greets O'Neill briskly before moving over to Teal'c. As Teal'c inquires about his family, Bra'tac informs him that though his wife, Drey'auc is well, his son, Rya'c, has been taken by Apophis.
Hammond, Bra'tac and SG1 are in the briefing room, discussing the situation. Hammond reminds O'Neill that his report (from after "The Serpents Lair") clearly stated that Apophis and Klorrel had died on their exploding ships. O'Neill and Carter reaffirm this, but Bra'tac interrupts, stating that Klorrel and Apophis escaped before the explosions via the onboard Stargate's. When Hammond asks what Apophis wants with Teal'c's son, Teal'c replies that it's not his son Apophis is after, but rather himself. Teal'c is a traitor and since the ship-explosions cost Apophis much of his army, Apophis must show that he is still powerful before the other system lords send someone to replace him. Bra'tac announces that there is a level of chaos on Chulak at the moment and that they should rescue the child now. Hammond replies that he can't send in his "best people" into what's obviously a trap. O'Neill and Bra'tac reply that because they know it's a trap, they'll be able to avoid it, and that now is the perfect time - Apophis is vulnerable. General Hammond considers this for a moment and then turns to Teal'c, telling him kindly he originally withheld information about his family because he feared it would make him vulnerable - now it has. This is the last time. SG1 has a go - get Apophis if they can, but the mission's prime directive is to get Teal'c's family out of Chulak and Apophis' hands and bring them back to Earth.
On Chulak, serpent guards are watching the Stargate. As it activates, smoke canisters are sent through and the guards collapse. Five figures then exit the Stargate - SG1 and Bra'tac. All are in robes and wearing gas-masks. They quickly pass the guards, removing their masks as they head towards the city. In the city, Bra'tac leads the way. They are obviously in an affluent part of the city and when Teal'c asks how Drey'auc could have afforded such a home, Bra'tac answers that he does not know. Drey'auc quickly moves to greet Teal'c as the team and Bra'tac enter her home. Softly she tells Teal'c that she couldn't stop him from taking their son - she was alone. A figure comes down the stairs - it's Fro'tak of the High Cliffs. He greets Teal'c and Bra'tac and guess correctly that Carter, Jackson and O'Neill are the Tau'ri warriors. Jack responds to greeting and introduces Carter and Jackson. Fro'tak thanks them for coming to help. Teal'c steps forward, thanking Fro'tak in return for coming to Drey'auc's home but as Drey'auc moves to stand beside Fro'tak, Fro'tak replies that it is his home. Teal'c is confused but still smiling as he now thanks Fro'tak for giving his wife and son shelter. Fro'tak calmly tells Teal'c that when Teal'c left again, Drey'auc decided to have her marriage to him removed. She is now Fro'tak's wife. Teal'c doesn't take this news too well, immediately attacking Fro'tak and causing O'Neill and Bra'tac to try and pull them apart. O'Neill reminds Teal'c that they came for his son - this doesn't help. Fro'tak is apologetic, stating that he wanted to be the one to tell Teal'c. Teal'c asks Bra'tac how he could have not known this. Fro'tak and Drey'auc moves outside, Carter going with them to find out what she can about Rya'c. Bra'tac assures Teal'c that he didn't know, and O'Neill asks Bra'tac if Fro'tak can be trusted. Teal'c states angrily that he can not be trusted by O'Neill doesn't think that's a very clear opinion right now. Bra'tac answers that Fro'tak has approached him many times stating thoughts that the Goa'uld are not gods and that he believes that he can be trusted, though he says, they should keep a close eye on him. Still angry, Teal'c mutters that Fro'tak should be killed, but Bra'tac scolds him on that line of thought. Jackson tries to reason with Teal'c, reminding him that Drey'auc and Rya'c now have a better lifestyle, and Bra'tac sides with Jackson. Bra'tac makes Teal'c promise that he won't exact revenge of Fro'tak for making him a "cuckold" and Teal'c agrees. Bra'tac then goes to bring back the others from outside. Teal'c tells Drey'auc that they will rescue Rya'c, and after that, Teal'c will never lay eyes on her again. He then leaves the room, leaving Drey'auc in tears. Outside, Drey'auc approaches Teal'c, remonstrating him for his behaviour. They talk, Drey'auc eventually revealing that she does not love Fro'tak, but he does offer her and her son a better life than the camps.
Back in the house, Fro'tak has pulled out a map and Bra'tac and SG1 are making their plans. Rya'c is being held in the west wing and they'll make their attack at the changing of the guards. Later that night, Bra'tac walks down a corridor before calling to some serpents guards. As the guards move towards him, he disappears back around the corner and a moment later, O'Neill, Carter and Jackson appear firing zat weapons. Teal'c appears from behind, using his staff weapon to knock a guard down. At the doors, Carter quickly detonates a charge, busting the lock. Opening the door, Rya'c runs out of the room and into Teal'c's arms but instead of greeting his father, yells for guards and wrenches free of his father's grasp. As guards appear and start firing, O'Neill yells for them to leave, Bra'tac pulling a stunned Teal'c away.
In Fro'tak's house, SG1 and Bra'tac return, announcing unhappily that they did rescue Rya'c. He is well, but he is now brainwashed, punishment from Apophis to Teal'c. A telecommunication globe suddenly shimmers causing Bra'tac to announce that Apophis is going to address the people. SG1, Bra'tac, Fro'tak and Drey'auc all gather around the globe as Apophis appears. Apophis announces that he is still powerful, and that his best supporter is no other than Rya'c, son of Teal'c. Rya'c appears on screen, stating that his father is a traitor and evil. Apophis states that he knows that Teal'c and the rest of SG1 are on the planet and that he will give a reward to whoever brings them in. Rya'c then also states a message about his mother. SG1 are confused by the message but Teal'c and Drey'auc are not. In Rya'c's words Teal'c hears a secret message for him to meet Rya'c the next morning. Bra'tac and SG1 are dubious about the secret message, fearing it too good a ploy for someone Rya'c's age but Teal'c won't hear of it. Just then, someone knocks at the door and SG1, Drey'auc and Bra'tac quickly hide in a secret passage. The guards search but don't find anything. Fro'tak's angry statements about the guards searching his house please Teal'c.
Later that night, Drey'auc approaches Teal'c and the two embrace. Unknown to them, Fro'tak watches angrily from the side. He disappears momentarily and then returns and leaves. Upstairs, O'Neill listens to him leaving. In Apophis' palace, Fro'tak approaches a guard and announces that he knows where the traitor, Teal'c, is and his companions. Suddenly the guard is shot by a zat twice and Fro'tak turns around to find O'Neill there. When Fro'tak goes to attack O'Neill with a knife, O'Neill zats him. Fro'tak won't remain quiet however, calling out for guards, and O'Neill zats him another two times, making him disintegrate. Guards arrive as O'Neill quickly hides and upon seeing the dead guard, announce for the palace to be sealed off and searched. Back at Fro'tak's, everyone looks up as there's a loud banging at the front door. Everyone except Bra'tac hides behind a wall whilst Bra'tac opens the front door. A serpent guard enters without speaking, causing Bra'tac to point a zat at him. As soon as he's placed his staff weapon against the wall and removed the headpiece, O'Neill comments "No wonder these guys are always cranky." and promptly asks for help in getting out of the armour. Apologetically, O'Neill tells Drey'auc and the others what happened during the night, and that he had no choice but to kill Fro'tak. Drey'auc is upset, murmuring that she made vows she could not keep and Teal'c moves to comfort her, whilst O'Neill announces that the suns are up - they should go get the kid.
In the groves, Rya'c arrives with a group of serpent guards. Surrounding the clearing, SG1 and Bra'tac watch them arrive. After orders from O'Neill, they move forward, shooting the guards with zats. Rya'c is ecstatic to see his father and the two embrace, Teal'c stating that his son has returned. The others disagree, murmuring concerns as O'Neill orders Carter to search the boy and Teal'c reiterates that it is not a trap, his son has returned. Instead, he states that his son was strong and opposed Apophis. Regardless, the group moves towards the Stargate as Bra'tac retrieves Drey'auc. Concern continues to rise as there is only two guards watching the way the home. Drey'auc and Rya'c reunite and O'Neill tries to trick Rya'c into revealing what's going on - what has Rya'c, or more importantly, Apophis, got planned. O'Neill doesn't believe Rya'c's assurances that he's cured from Apophis' brainwashing but after debating it out, they decide to leave anyway. The guards at the Stargate are easily defeated and after saying goodbye to Bra'tac, Rya'c and Drey'auc return to Earth with SG1, despite the concerns of Carter, O'Neill and Jackson.
At the SGC, Doctor Fraiser is running tests on Rya'c and finds nothing abnormal. There's no naquidah bomb as in Cassandra's case and everything seems fine. O'Neill still wants to put a guard on Rya'c though, just to be sure. Meanwhile, Rya'c is very anxious to see the outside world. As Rya'c talks with his parents, Drey'auc notices something and pulls Teal'c aside to tell him that Rya'c previously lost two teeth training with Bra'tac. Rya'c has no teeth missing. As O'Neill talks to Rya'c, keeping his attention diverted from Teal'c, Drey'auc and Doctor Fraiser, Rya'c still maintains that he wants to go outside. Doctor Fraiser approaches, now wanting to take a blood sample, but Rya'c senses something is wrong and starts yelling that he will kill them all. Teal'c restrains him as Fraiser tranquilizes the boy, his parents laying him down on the stretcher.
In a guarded cell, Rya'c awakes to his mother's caress but immediately starts shouting that he hates her, that he wants Apophis and that they can not stop him. He snaps his teeth together sharply even as Drey'auc informs him that they're - the teeth - are gone. In the briefing room, SG1, Hammond and Fraiser watch the exchange on the security camera and Fraiser explains that the teeth were fake, each tooth containing a different biological organism - a virus. They were dormant whilst separated, but if combined it would become the deadliest thing ever seen - making anthrax look like a cold virus. If Rya'c had gotten outside, and broken the teeth, the viruses could have combined and spread around the Earth in a week, killing all life. General Hammond immediately asks if there is anything else "hiding" in Rya'c, any more devices, but Fraiser states that everything else has come up normal - x-rays, catscans - the boy's clean. They now theorise ways to unbrainwash the kid. "De-programming" suggests Carter, and O'Neill warns Teal'c that it's not the kind of thing you want to do to a kid. Teal'c responds by stating that all Jaffa are taught to be strong from birth - Rya'c will withstand it.
Outside Rya'c's cell, Carter, Jackson, O'Neill, Fraiser and Drey'auc wait and listen as Rya'c screams out that he "hates you" and "traitor" from his cell. Teal'c is inside, suffering his son's raging. When Rya'c goes to hit Teal'c with a chair, Teal'c easily disarms him and grabs his son, bending down. Firmly he tells Rya'c that Apophis is a false god. Rya'c will have none of that, stating that Apophis is his god and that Teal'c is a traitor. Teal'c responds by stating that he is his father. Rya'c, maintains that Apophis loves him. If Apophis loves him so much, Teal'c asks, then why did he send Rya'c to destroy himself? Rya'c responds that he would not have died, but Teal'c reminds Rya'c that he is flesh and blood - he would have died. Rya'c then screams that Teal'c lied - he said he would come back but he never did. Teal'c looks away, unable to refute that. Later, Teal'c sits on the bed, watching tiredly as Rya'c paces the room. Rya'c demands that he be returned to Apophis as Teal'c asks why. Answering, Rya'c maintains his defense that Apophis loves him and that he loves Apophis. Teal'c appeals to Rya'c's memories of them as a family, and of their love for each other and Rya'c moves forward as if to embrace his father. At the last moment, the boy spits in his father face. Drey'auc, who was watching from the window in the door, turns away in tears as Teal'c exits the room. Teal'c asks Fraiser and SG1 if they know of another way to cure Rya'c and O'Neill mutters ECT - electroconvulsive or shock therapy. Fraiser has doubts - it could kill the larval goa'uld in Rya'c and therefore Rya'c, but O'Neill theorises that it's probably the same as a zat blast. Teal'c knows that this won't kill his son but tells Drey'auc that it will cause him great pain. Drey'auc responds that she trusts Teal'c's judgement. Teal'c and Drey'auc enter the cell, Rya'c looking away from them as he lies on the bed. Teal'c tells him that his mother is here to help him but Rya'c states that he only wants Apophis. In tears, Drey'auc and Teal'c move to the other side of the room, Teal'c asking for his son's forgiveness as he raises the zat gun and shoots Rya'c. Rya'c writhes in pain but eventually quietens and Drey'auc and Teal'c move to hold him on the bed. The boy is still in great pain though and Teal'c remembers that Drey'auc used to sing Rya'c a lullaby. Drey'auc starts to sing as the rest of SG1 watch from outside the cell. After awhile, Rya'c finishes the song and Rya'c opens his eyes, asking where they are and why his father is there - he's cured.
In the embarkation room, Teal'c, Drey'auc and Rya'c stand on the ramp in front of an activated Stargate. In the control room above General Hammond tells Teal'c he has a go whilst Drey'auc thanks the rest of SG1, she wishes they could stay. Carter and Jackson reply that they wish the same, but they wouldn't have much of a life here. The Land of Light (from the episode "The Broca Divide") however, will welcome them gladly and Tuplo is already waiting for them on the other side. O'Neill joins in, handing Rya'c a baseball glove as he tells the boy there'll be lots of space for him to run around. Having never seen a baseball glove before, Rya'c places it on his head, causing the others to smile. O'Neill takes it off the kids head and places it back in his hands, promising that he'll visit and "explain a few things". Teal'c leads his family up the ramp, promising to return, and with one last look back at SG1, they step through the Stargate.
