OVERALL OPINION
This is a feel-good ensemble episode with a few S/J moments for projectors to note. Also, on a fashion note, this is one of the few eps where we see SG1 out of uniform. After their visit to 'a cheap clothes store' Jack and Sam get the better half of the deal (Daniel and Teal'c look... er... well... very '1960's' [g]). Jack is wearing jeans and a leather jacket and Sam is attractively dressed in a floaty skirt and shirt.
NOTABLE SCENES
1) Before The Mission: "What is she doing?" asks Jack, sounding for all the world like a husband waiting for his wife. When Sam offers an explanation, he pretends to have understood it, probably fooling no-one.
2) Under The Missile: In what could well be their last moments alive, Sam runs over to Jack and attempts to help him with the control panel he's trying to beat into submission.
3) In The Cell: Jack is annoyed that Sam appears to have made a mistake. "A little bump in the calculations, Captain?" he asks sarcastically. She accepts that it's her fault, but can't offer an explanation. This is yet another in the ever expanding list of occasions where Jack expects her to get everything right and solve all his problems. "Just get us back and we'll pretend it never happens."
4) Interrogation: Not a shippy scene (Sam isn't in it, so how could it be?) but a wonderful example of Jack's dry sense of humour. For example, he is asked about the zat gun.
Jack: Well, it's hard to say.
Thornburn: A state secret?
Jack: No, just difficult to pronounce.
5) In The Van: Sam finishes Jack's sentence for him.
Jack: ... they'll probably try to split us up so we don't have much time to...
Sam: ... escape and hopefully live out the rest of our lives without affecting history.
She's knows that's not what he was going to say so she interrupts before she has to actually contradict him. All through this scene, Jack directs almost all of his comments at Sam.
6) Escape: While they are talking to Hammond, Sam and Jack keep looking at each other, as if continuously gauging each other's reaction to what's going on. Sam derives some pleasure in the fact that in 1969 she outranks Hammond.
7) In The Forest: "It's all in the note." "No, sir!" Sam is not happy that she has to tell Jack more news that he doesn't want to hear.
8) Hitching A Ride: "Carter, stick your thumb out!" Amazingly, with only a little shrug, she does just that. It could be projected that Jack has asked her because he is very aware of her 'womanly virtues'.
9) In The Bus: While Jack is explaining to Jennie that they have a problem with the establishment, Sam is watching him very carefully, probably worried that he was going to say something he shouldn't and ready to interrupt if he did. "I really love your hair." Sam is embarrassed but whether it's because of Jennie's comment or the long, hard look Jack gives her it's impossible to say. I'd say this is possibly the shippiest moment in the episode.
10) By The Camp Fire: Jack passes Sam a mug of soup, then sits down very close to her. She then works out how they have travelled in time but unfortunately Michael and Jennie have overheard their discussion. When Jack says they are in trouble with the establishment, "just not the establishment of this planet," she glares at him. Then Jack produces a carbon copy of her expression and they both glare at Daniel when he mentions "a galaxy far, far away."
11) At The Observatory: Sam reminds Jack to use a filter over the telescope so he doesn't damage his eyes when he looks at the sun. She's trying to look after him!
12) The Stargate: When Sam is in the middle of a 'technobabble' Jack cuts her off. "How much power?" Their eyes lock, challenging each other. She is not intimidated by him but accepts his authority.
13) In The Future: Sam recognises Cassandra but Jack doesn't. "Who is this?" he asks, and taps Sam on the shoulder. As they leave, Cassandra says, "I will tell you this, your journey's just beginning." I can't help wondering what she knows that we don't?
