OVERALL OPINION
Lots of nice, shippy moments, loads of teasing and looks, so this one comes out pretty high, but still not the highest of them all.
NOTABLE SCENES
1) Teach Me: Meryn has just said she will teach Sam how to use the reactor. Sam looks quite surprised and immediately looks to Jack, who simply shrugs.
2) Age: Sam, Jack, Hammond, and Meryn are all headed to the infirmary to get the young girl checked out. The whole time they are in the elevator Jack keeps glancing at Sam, then, as Meryn explains her understanding of why they are taking her to the infirmary, Jack makes an 'Of course' reaction, as if to make Sam laugh. As they are walking to the infirmary from the elevator, Jack asks Meryn how old she is, which she tells him, and then she boldly asks Jack how old he is, effectively surprising him and making Sam grin. Jack then sarcastically repeats his question "So Meryn, I understand you're a reactor expert", making Sam smile wider as she looks at him.
3) Rocket Scientist: They are finishing up with Meryn in the infirmary and Jack returns. Sam gives him a smile as she sees him enter. During the whole scene the two of them stand very close together and tease each other. Sam can't seem to stop grinning the whole time and they both keep glancing at the other, to check the other's reaction to what is said. Sam also explains to Meryn, for Jack, why he called Meryn a 'rocket scientist'.
4) Nanites: They have just found out that Meryn has nanites in her body. Sam explains to the young girl their previous experience with nanocites (Brief Candle), a similar type of device, and she kindly says, as she looks at Jack, that he was 'adversely affected'.
5) Sleeping Beauty: Sam has fallen asleep at the lab table while Meryn has been drawing the reactor core. Jack comes in and goes over to wake her up. He leans toward Sam, quietly saying "Major", then shouts "Carter", instantly waking her up. She seems quite embarrassed, not only at having fallen asleep, but also because it was Jack who woke her up. Not long after that, Jack is bothered that Sam and Meryn haven't gotten any sleep. Meryn informs him that she doesn't need much sleep, which Jack accepts, but he doesn't let go of it for Sam and insists that she get some sleep.
6) Brain Sucking: They have found out what happens to the apprentice children and Jack wants to keep Meryn with them, to protect her. Sam very obviously wants to support him, but she knows that they can't risk causing a major incident. You can tell her inability to support him this time bothers her a lot. She wants to protect the girl as much as he does. Later, when Jack is trying to explain to Meryn why they want to keep her with them, Sam is there supporting him, presumably at the ok of Hammond.
7) Finger Painting 101: Jack has taken Meryn to a grade school and she has participated in the art class. She shows Jack her finished picture, which includes a stick figure similar to the one Sam drew for her earlier on when attempting to explain drawing to her. Jack asks who the stick figure is, and Meryn responds: "It is a representation of Major Carter." Jack smiles, then says: "Of course it is." He looks away and is still smiling, as if saying 'Yeah, that's Sam's drawing'.
8) Going Home: Meryn is preparing to return to Orban, but Jack wants to give her a going away present of crayons. As Jack and Meryn talk during this whole scene, Sam smiles softly at him from time to time, and looks at him a lot. A little later SG1 is asked to return to Orban, and when they do, Sam points out Meryn, who is coloring with the crayons, to Jack and allows him to go see her alone. She knows how important the girl was to him.
