Shippy Review

SEASON Three

EPISODE NUMBER 316

EPISODE TITLE Urgo

WRITTEN BY Tor Alexander Valenza

DIRECTED BY Peter DeLuise

REVIEWED BY Shane Vansen

OVERALL OPINION I love this ep for Urgo alone -- he's fabulous! -- but add all the looks, interaction, and yes, hand touching, between Sam and Jack and we have a highly shippy episode. The overall relaxed atmosphere between our favourite couple combined with the fact that it's followed by such an angsty ep (A Hundred Days) serves to up the romance quotient.

NOTABLE SCENES

1) Cliché War: From the time Jack opens his mouth to start the cliché battle until the moment they step through the Stargate, Sam's grinning at everything he says, once again appreciating his sense of humour.

2) Missing time: Seemingly returning directly to the Gate Room, Sam comes to stand behind Jack as they talk to Hammond and answers for him when he doesn't have a response; he doesn't seem to mind.

3) Blue Jell-O: Sam is the first to be "drawn" to Jack in the commissary, where he directs all of his comments to her.

4) All desserts on base appear to be in grave danger: As Jack flippantly answers Hammond's question about side effects, he looks to Sam -- at his side, of course -- for her reaction. Unfortunately, we don't get to see what it is.

5) Who is Mary Steenburgen?: As Urgo makes himself visible for the first time and Sam starts technobabbling about how it's possible for him to be seen by SG-1 alone, Jack questions, "Carter?" All it takes is her name and she knows to explain it in layman's terms, so that he can understand.

6) Back in the MedLab: In the longest of the three infirmary scenes, Sam and Jack are sitting -- rather close -- next to each other on the gurney. When Urgo tells Sam "She got it. You got it" when she correctly guesses the reason for his being in their brains, Jack turns to look at her; she responds with a surprised, modest look. And by the end of the scene, Sam's got her hand awfully close to Jack's <ahem> rear end. :)

7) Me, me, me: Sitting next to each other during the debriefing, Sam and Jack's elbows are practically touching as they rest on the table, their hands/fingers in the same positions. When Sam theorizes that she may have a way to "turn Urgo off" Jack reaches over to touch her hand. Looking a bit startled, she glances from his face to his hand as he pulls it away, as if just realizing what he's done.

8) Go eat pie with Colonel O'Neill: As Sam walks down the hallway, presumably on her way to her lab, she tells Urgo to go to the commissary to eat pie with Jack -- she knows exactly where he is. (Not an S/J moment, but funny: watch Sam in the background as Janet and Hammond continue the conversation; she's arguing with an invisible Urgo.)

9) What a world: In Sam's lab, Jack moves to stand next to his major. Maybe more of an indication of how well AT and RDA work together than an S/J moment, they turn in perfect sync as Urgo tries to convince them to let him "live" by making himself smaller and presumably less annoying. When Urgo makes himself into an Air Force officer and asks, "Can you resist this?", Jack looks him up and down as if wondering if Sam might possibly be attracted to someone who looks like that; after all, Urgo can read her thoughts. After the EM pulse has gone off and Urgo disappears Daniel congratulates Sam, while Jack raises his eyebrows with a "way to go" look on his face: more silent communication. She knows what he means.

10) Row, row, row your boat: As Sam begins singing, Jack is the next to pick up the song. (As a side note, Sam is not a bad singer -- to my admittedly tone-deaf ears -- but Jack had a valid point when he said, "Okay, if you call that singing" when he hears himself on tape.)

11) Back in the infirmary: Jack looks at Sam when they're told they're on a week's downtime until they can be sure Urgo's gone. She appears to be the only other one who's not happy with the decision.

12) Back in the briefing room, Sam and Jack argue right across Daniel, who doesn't even move out of the way. Apparently, he's used to their little spats. :)

13) How beautiful: In the Control Room as SG-1 attempts to contact Urgo's maker, Urgo tries to convince them instead to visit Maui. Reading Jack's thoughts about "big beaches and little bikinis" he shares it with the rest of the team, and Sam turns to look at Jack with a highly amused statement even as he tries to deny it. The looks they give each other here are adorable. :) Can't we all guess who Jack was picturing in a little bikini....?

14) Again, not an S/J moment really, but it brings up an interesting question: In the locker room, everyone is clearly still changing (Sam is pulling on her jacket while Jack is putting on his belt.) Does Sam change with the guys? Or did she get half-dressed, wait outside as the guys made themselves presentable, then come back in to finish dressing? I'm leaning towards option one, if only for fanfic possibilities....

15) Evil, horrible madman: In Togar's lab, Jack and Sam are, as usual, standing next to each other. When he says that Urgo will be destroyed, Jack asks if there isn't another way; though he claims not to believe Urgo's sentience, he asks for Sam's sake. Later, when Urgo says that all he wants to do is "live, experience the universe, and eat pie," Sam looks at Jack as he quips "Who doesn't?" Jack also looks to Sam before admitting that he does like Urgo a little, as if to gain her approval.

16) More missing time: Returning once more without remembering any of the past ten hours, Sam again moves to stand behind Jack and proceeds to answer General Hammond on his behalf -- again, without him seeming to mind. After the general orders them to the infirmary, Sam watches Jack and only begins to move after he does.
