The Truth About Windows 2000

Microsoft has released Windows 2000 and I know many of you are going to ask if you should upgrade to Windows 2000.  Well the answer is....

..."NO"

Why do you say that? What happened?
Why is Windows 2000 being released? Will Windows 2000 work on a PB System?
Could I Be Wrong?

Why do you say that?
I have not tried a Windows 2000 upgrade myself on my trusty PB system; instead I base this advice on articles that I have read.  Just about every source that I have read says that the upgrade to Windows 2000 can be difficult and certain hardware and software may not work.

The reason why it may be so difficult for the home user is because Windows 2000 is the next version of Windows NT, which is an operating system designed for the office environment.

If you still want to upgrade to Windows 2000 you will need to:

Additionally, if you like games, many of them will not work on Windows 2000.  It does have better compatibility with games than Windows NT, but not as good as Windows 98.

What happened?
I thought Windows 2000 was supposed to be the the latest operating system for the home user.  It is not; Windows 98 Second Edition (Win 98 SE), released late last year, is the OS for home users.  If you want the latest operating system I would suggest you stick to Win 98 SE.

For the home environment Windows 2000 will not be worth the money, but for those of you who like to have the latest OS on your computer Microsoft is working on the next upgrade for the home user.  This next OS will be called Windows Millennium Edition (I don't have a release date for this).

Why is Windows 2000 being released?
Well this release is primarily for businesses and it has many features that businesses will be interested in.  For example, it: There are many more new features, in fact so many that business users will be very happy with Windows 2000.  I won't get into the details since the foucs of this web site is the home user.

Will Windows 2000 work on a PB?
I don't know, but I am sure a few of you may want to try it.  There were a few brave souls trying to get Windows NT to work on their PB systems; I would expect the same types of problems with Windows 2000.

If you do try it, drop me a line and let me know how it goes.  I would be interseted in your successes and failures.

Could I Be Wrong?
Not long after I wrote this page I received the following e-mail and I am posting it to be fair.
"Hi, I Have Recently Read Your Report On Windows 2000. I Have a PB 640 System and I purchased Windows 2000 I installed it and found that it was much faster and much more reliable than previous versions of Windows.  The GUI is much more pleasant and it has numoroius features and options which were unavailable in previous versions. Users in the United Kingdom recieved FREE copys of the OS and most were very pleased. I feel that your report was unfair and that you should try the Operating System for Yourself. I Have to admit that the OS has numorous bugs as does any new Operating System. One Being its Hardware compatibility which I have to say they did try to resolve although it has improved it is still not perfect. Thank You." - Paul BETA TESTER FOR MICROSFT
Well I do admit I have not tried Windows 2000 myself, I trusted the reports from some of the major computer magazines who tried it on many machines.  I am not fortunate enough to have a budget that will allow me to buy an OS that may or may not work with my hardware and software.  Anyway, I have requested more information from the above individual and will keep you posted.  Additionally I would love to here from you if you have tried it.
