Club Profile

(This page last updated 5/1/2006)

The South Jersey Hawg Hunters bass club was founded in the early 1990's and started recording tournament results in 1994.  Current membership is 32.  Our emphasis is on having fun fishing competitively for bass and participating in other fishing-related activities.  Two of our club's other goals are to keep costs low and bureaucracy to a minimum.  The Hawg Hunters are not looking for any new members at this time.

At all times we try to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship and environmentalism.  We do everything possible at club activities to ensure that bass are released alive and that the natural environment isn't spoiled.

Our club is a member of the South Jersey Bass Club Association (SJBCA).  The SJBCA offers a number of benefits to member clubs, while having only minimal dues and no interference in club operations.  We are not affiliated with the "BASS Federation Nation" nor "The Bass Federation Inc", due to our desire to keep members’ costs low and limit the amount of outside interference in our club's operation.

We have many club members who, looking for a higher level of competition and bigger winnings, participate in tournament trails outside the club.  They fish local buddy bass tournaments, the Walmart Bass Fishing League, the FLW/Stren series, and the American Bass Anglers trail.  For information on our members' success in these trails, check out the Other Results section of this website.

The S.J. Hawg Hunters hold a number of club bass tournaments during the year.  All tournaments are "buddy" format, with members declaring their designated partners when they begin fishing each season.  Our tournaments are held at lakes and rivers in most of the counties of South Jersey.  For tournament fishing, each team's boat must be equipped with an aerated livewell or cooler large enough to sustain the limit of bass.  All boats must also have a life vest for each person on board.  We also organize long-weekend fishing/camping trips to such fishing locations as Mattawoman Creek/Potomac River (Md), John Kerr Reservoir/Buggs Island (Va) and Lake Anna (Va).  Other club activities include attending fishing/outdoor shows & seminars, an annual club barbecue and a pre-season meeting at a local pub.

The rules for our club tournaments are available upon request, but basically a very small entry fee is collected from each participant.  Most of that goes toward the pay-out to the overall winning team (heaviest total weight), some goes to the second place team and some goes to the lunker winner.  If ten or more teams enter, we pay down to third place.  If 15 or more teams enter, we pay down to fourth place.  Points are awarded for top-three place finishes, lunker wins, heavy bags of fish, number of fish caught and attendance.  The normal limit is five fish per team, with a maximum of two fishermen per team.  Some ten-fish tournaments are held in order to qualify for the annual SJBCA heavy ten-fish stringer award. The club holds a "Classic" tournament at the end of each season.  The Classic is held on two consecutive days on two different bodies of water.  At the end of our club tournament season, a six-man team representing the club participates in the annual SJBCA "Bass Bowl".  Our six-man team is made up of the top three teams in our club's final point standings.

Currently, the club President/Secretary/Photographer/Webmaster is Fred Lentz.  Tournament Director/Weighmaster is Bill Duckardt.  Livewell Checkers and Back-up Weighmasters are Chris Oeser & Ken Merlock.  Weigh-in Recorder/Website Technician is Rick Lentz.

The founding members of the South Jersey Hawg Hunters were:  Bill Duckardt*, Mark Duckardt, Fred Lentz*, Rick Lentz*, Brian Mathis, Bill Muhlbaier Sr, Bill Muhlbaier Jr, Brian Muhlbaier, Dennis Snyder* and Yvonne Snyder.  (* still an active member)

NOTE:  THIS IS THE ORIGINAL SOUTH JERSEY HAWG HUNTERS BASS CLUB.  A BASS Federation club was recenty formed in Willingboro using the same name as our club.  That new club has no relationship whatsoever with our club.  Our attempts to contact that club about the situation have gone unanswered.
