Buttboard Equipment For beginners to street luge, a buttboard is a good alternative to getting a streetluge. It's much cheaper, more manueverable, easy to transport, and quite capable of high speed. Buttboarding is also a separate class in luge racing and have rules that limits the size of the deck (12"x48" max) and wheels (70mm). Sample pic by Chris Chaput (pic) If you are starting out, you can use your longboard, but a buttboard deck is much nicer. Wider for more turning leverage and long nose overhang for hamstring support. The current popular setup is a deck with @33" wheelbase, 10" of nose. Race rules dictate that the deck be 12"wide and 48" long max The popular truck setup is to run RII trucks with hangars flipped (negative castor) with harder blue bushings on bottom and black bushings on top. Some also use wedges (skinny ends forward). Indy 215's are also an option. Add rails to the bottom for hand holds, foam paddings on top, stringers, wheel wells, etc. Tip: position your weight behind the front truck when lying down achieving a 60/40 weight distribution. (pic) Safety First - wear leathers, gloves with knuckle protectors, full face helmet (wedge type for visibility), and shoes with tire retread for braking (see hughR's luge page) |
