"Rape was only a word, until it happened to me" |
I have been reading on the web about rape, trying to get an enough research to make this page as detailed as the self injury page, however, i have been researching SI for about 5 years whereas i have only been researching rape for a few months. so hopefully as i continue my research this will grow better. All of the sources that i use here, will be listed on the links page as to avoid listing the quotations here and making for diffacult reading. if anyone has a problem or questions, please e mail me... Every two minutes a woman is raped in the united states. to me that statistic is horrifying! in one television show (assuming its a half hour) that makes fifteen rapes. if you are visiting me here today because you were raped, let me assure you that you are not going through any of the feelings that you are having alone. Rape is defined legaly as a person causing " penetration of the anus, vagina, or mouth of another person with a sexual organ or object, without that person's consent OR causes another person to contact or penetrate the mouth, anus or sexual organ of another person without their consent." because of my own personal experience this will mostly deal with aquaintence rape, but it may pertain to many others. stranger rape is defined as nonconsensual, or forced sex, on a woman who does not know her attacker. in general acceptance of stranger rape is more accepted than aquaintence rape. in is also seen as "real rape" the immage of a stranger forcing his way into a womans house, or down a back road. acquaintance rape is defined as nonconsensual sex between adults who know each other. A study of college woman showed that 1 in 4 were the victims of rape or attempted rape. 84% of the woman knew their attackers and 57% were on a "date." according to this study, rape is more common than left handedness, heart attacks, and alcoholism. It has been found that stranger and aquaintence rape do not differ on the following things : 1. Their perceptions of the clarity that they communicated nonconsent. 2. The degree of their resistance. 3. The feelings of anger and depression during the assault and after. 4. The extent that they felt responsible for the assault. The differences that strager rape victims reported were: 1. 99% was a single assault. 2. Rated the offender as more aggressive. 3. Were more frightened. 4. Felt the rapist was more responsible for what happened. 5. Were more likely to encounter threats of bodily harm, hitting, slapping, and use or display of weapons. 6. 73% discussed the experience with someone. 7. 19% sought crisis services. 8. Were more likely to report to the police. 9. 45% did not consider the experience rape. while aquaintence rape victims said: 1. 56% was a single assault. 2. Were more likely to be assaulted by a single perpetrator. 3. 44% discussed the experience with someone. 4. 2% sought crisis services. 5. 77% did not consider the experience rape (Koss, Dinero, and Seibel, 1988). survivors of aquaintence rape are much less likly to view themselves as victims, instead they feel responsible for the rape. she see the experience and thinks of how she provoked it. survivors of stranger rape (and im not sure i agree with this, but i do not know any survivors to ask) experience shame regarding the rape, but not the self blame. the shame is usualy tied to physical and emotional violation rather than the self. These are just some interesting/scary facts that i found on another web page: (they might not match exactly with the above, but i think they are important enough to note) - over 5,000 woman are raped on the job in the united states -only 16% of rapes are reported to the police -25% of rapes are reported more than 24 hours later -28% of victims are raped by their husband or boyfriend -35% by an aquaintence -5% by other relatives -1871 rapes occure each day -in a survey of high school students, 56% of girls and 76% of boys felt that forceable sex was ok under certain circumstances. - in a survey of college males, 35% said that they would commit rape if they thought they could get away with it. 1 in 12 comitted something that legaly is defined as rape. -33% of sexual assault cases, the assault occurs in the victim's home. -One in four women on college campuses were victims of rape or attempted rape. -The risk of rape is four times higher for women ages 15 to 24. -21% of women raped by strangers reported the crime to police; only 1.7% of acquaintance rape victims reported the assault. -28% of all acquaintance rape victims considered suicide after the assault. |
