What I see wrong with Christians...
Back to the article index
So, I'm sure the more religious of you are wondering, "Geez, what's this guy's problem with Christians? Why does he just attack us?" Well, there are two reasons for this...

1) I find Christianity to be one of the more obviously flawed of the world religions.
2) It's the single most followed religion in the world (nearly 40% of the world follows some form of it).

Therefore, I'm wasting no time to go ahead and point out what I don't like about Christians. But first, let me clear up two things,

1) I'm not attacking all Christians, merely the fundamentalists.
2) I do not equate Christianity with mental inferiority.

Now that that's outta the way, let us proceed.
First of all, there is the inability for many Christians to follow their own religion. There's no telling how many times I've heard them gossiping and threatening others (including me). Let's not even mention all the ones that are in prison...every prisoner you see talks about Jesus and his "conversion". Oh, I forgot, they weren't "True Christians"
(tm) when they commited the crime.
Next, the rituals that many of them perform, when few of them even understand why they are performing them. For example, in school one Monday afternoon I heard a girl next to me (the daughter of a preacher) talk about getting baptized the night before to a friend of hers. She also mentioned that this was in fact the
second time she had been baptized...the first time when she was quite young. I felt like turning around and saying, "What's the matter? Was the first time not good enough?", but I stopped myself.
Many times, I've heard the same few people in school say "Hey, (insert teacher name here), I got saved last night in church!" To which the teacher replies "Well, that's good."
Saved from what? Did paramedics rescue her after the roof of the church collapsed?
What's really scary about this, though, is that these same few people say it EVERY WEEK. Back in my 10th grade year, I took Spanish with a girl who would say that exact same thing EVERY Monday and EVERY Thursday. What good is salvation if it runs out every three days or so? Is it like a parking meter? That must be it. Every Christian gets his own "Savometer"
(tm), and when the salvation level gets too low, he has to refill it by getting "saved" again. I wonder if they fail to do this do they get a ticket from the Almighty Himself...
Next, and this is a big bugaboo with me...the coercion. How many times have you heard fundies complain about school prayer? Can you count them? I know I can't. Yet school prayer is not illegal. MANDATORY prayer is, meaning they can't make anyone else pray, or listen to their prayers. The Fundies, pissed that they can't convert the heathens, immediately start bitching about "persecution" and "not being able to pray", and even going to far as to say that the Supreme Court is "hostile to religion", for making a ruling that as much protects their religion and anyone elses'. That's what fundamentalists don't understand...that Separation of Church and State is a concept that not only benefits the State, but their church as well, since it also keeps the government from meddling in their religious affairs. But the government is "hostile" to them. Awww....Don't we feel so sorry for them, not being able to force their religion on everyone else?
One time, while goofing around on the Steve and DC Theology board (see my links section), I noticed a post about the ACLU. Curious, I decided to read it. The thread starter complained about how anti-Christian the ACLU was, and how selective they are in the Constitutional rights they protect. Somebody going by the name of "Storm" posted the following reply:

"
The ACLU says this offends and that offends...I think it's time the churches stood up, spoke up, and let it be known that they offend us!!!"

Why? Why would the ACLU offend somebody? Just because they don't let you run the country? Because you don't get to step all over the minority and offend them with your sermons (many of which speak out against atheists and other religions)? You can't have freedom of religion under a theocracy. And while I'm on that subject, if you have the freedom to worship the way you want, you can also have the freedom not to. Tell someone that next time they say "We have freedom of religion, not freedom from it."
The same can be said of posting "God Bless America", "In God We Trust", and the Ten Commandments. The ACLU tries to keep everything fair. Every atheist I've ever heard of supports the ACLU, since they attempt to keep a secular government, which in turn keeps one religion from stepping all over another. But do the Fundies really care? "To hell with Freedom of Religion!", they say. "God makes the rules, not man. Kick the non Christians out if they don't like it!" And so many of these people have the nerve to call themselves patriots...
What the Christian religion needs is an innovator. Someone to change its fundamentals so we wouldn't have to worry about "fundamentalists" and "non-funamentalists". There should be a way to revise this religion, because fundamentalist Christianity has no place in this modern society. I think of it as being one of our biggest millstones. Of course, if there was an innovator to Christianity, people would just call him the Antichrist, and say he was the false prophet mentioned in the Bible. Much the same way as  if it was scientifically proven that their God doesn't exist. They would all still hold on to for fear that it's the Devil trying to trick them all.
I suppose the only thing to do is sit back and watch hopefully while the fundamentalists lose favor with the American public. It may take a while, but rest assured the day will finally come.
