The Ten Commandments
It's doubtless one of the dopiest things that Christians worry about is the whole Ten Commandments issue, which is fortunately fading. Still, some wonder...should we post them in courtrooms? Perhaps we should post them in schools...that might tone down all these highly publicized deviant acts that flash before us on CNN every day. Drug use, rape, pregnancy, maybe even the occasional cafeteria hot dog that is of questionable origin. The main problem though, is school violence. People complain that we should put the Ten Commandments in schools because it would keep some guy from snapping one day, bringing a 9mm to school...and well, you get the picture.
School fights have been common for years...but it seems that the shootings have only come up in the past few years. The first one that comes to mind is Pearl, MS...but maybe it's because it's so close to where I live. There was one in Kentucky, Oregon, and that infamous one in Colorado. The media covered these stories while they happen, letting the audience see the drama unfold. This leaves them in a shallow stupor. Wow, schools are a lot more violent these days...or
are they?
A recent study by the Department of School Education and Violence showed that school violence is actually
down 30% since 1992. While school shootings have only really been into play for about 10 years now, other forms of school violence are way down. And since these big shootings only come once every year or two, it's easy to see how such results were obtained.
Still, some people shun this. "No," they say, "schools were much safer way back when. The study must've been flawed." One fellow I was arguing with not long ago said "Well, tell that to the kids at Columbine!" Okay...the following sentence is addressed to anyone from Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado who might be reading this...

School violence is down 30% from 1992.
       There, how's that?
But I talk quite a bit about religious oppression in schools...hell, it's the basis of my site. Why don't I tackle another topic, which I mentioned earlier in this article? Posting the Ten Commandments in the courtrooms of America. Ooooh...what a novel idea! "The laws of the United States are based on Scripture," some may argue (ever notice how religious fruitcakes always say "scripture" instead of the Bible? Hmmm). The laws of the U.S. are NOT based on the Ten Commandments. The only commandments that are laws in the U.S. are purgery, theft, and murder, and these so-called "common sense" laws have existed as laws in cultures pre-dating Moses. But who cares? Let's post plaques of the Ten Commandments all over the place, when only three of them apply to our government! Of course, if you listen to nutballs like Robert T. Lee (see my links section), our country should be changed and centered around the Ten Commandments. Sure, let's forget drug use, rape, violation of personal property, and every other law in the books, and let these people run amok. Then let's sentence a man for coveting his neighbor's leaf blower. How completely stupid can a person possibly be?
A church sign on my way from school every afternoon says "The Supreme Court will have to answer to the Supreme God." What the hell is that supposed to mean? These fundies go on and on about how American they are, then they go and dump all over the First Amendment. Sure, you have freedom of religion, as long as you choose Christianity. And every time the government turns down a Christian's proposal in order to please another group, it's the big, evil government out to get poor little minority them, never once thinking there are people other than Christians in this country. It's revolting, but I guess there's not a damn thing to be done about it...
