The desire for a marae at Okarea is an old and enduring one. Our tupuna lived here in a close papakainga - whanau community. In 1948 land was set aside as a reserve for a marae.  Our people had a whare that functioned for their marae purposes.

Since the 1990's our whanau have sought to reestablish a presence on this whenua. In 1996 a Maori reservation was gazetted for a marae for the Ngati Hine and Ngati Mahuta of the Waikato tribe.

Our goals are: 1  - build a whare moe and toilets ;  2  build a whare kai ; 3  complete the marae.  The pages in this website  throw light on this project.
