Newly-crowned league champions Tampines Rovers wrapped up their season in convincing fashion with their 12th league win on the trot after a 5-1 drubbing over Woodlands Wellington in front of a packed Tampines Stadium.

With the S-League trophy presented to the Stags an hour before kick-off, the game was played in a festive atmosphere at the stadium & the home team certainly did not disappoint with a stirring performance. Mustafic Fahrudin opened accounts in minute by slamming the ball past Yazid after Mirko Grabovac had set him up beautifully with a neat back-heel at the top of the penalty box. The second goal arrived when Grabovac tucked in the rebound after Yazid had spilled his initial effort from point-blank range. The game was effectively over as a contest in first half stoppage time when the tireless Tam Kim Leng picked out Grabovac with a pin-point cross that left the striker with the simple task of nodding past Yazid from inside the six-yard box.

Despite the comfortable lead, Tampines did not take their foot off the pedal after the interval & continued the onslaught which led to Noh Alam Shah adding goals number four and five in the second half. Just 4 minutes into the resumption, Grabovac broke the Rams’ offside trap with customary ease before squaring the ball for his strike partner to tap into an empty net. Alam Shah scored his second with an identical effort 8 minutes later, although it was Aliff who provided the assist this time after dispossessing Azmi Mahamud just outside his own penalty area. Tampines had to play on with 10 men with 10 minutes remaining after captain Nazri Nasir had to leave the field due to a head injury with the Stags having already used up all their substitutions. Rams capitalized on their numerical advantage with substitute Shahri Musa scoring a consolation goal in the dying minutes of the game after replacement goalkeeper Hafez Mawasi had allowed Ahmad Latiff’s fierce drive to squirm under his body.

That clearly did not dampen the crowd’s spirits as they streamed onto the pitch to congratulate their heroes after the final whistle was blown. The scene of the championship trophy being paraded once again was a fitting conclusion to a truly remarkable season for the Stags.

The Cubs presented outgoing coach Kim Poulsen the perfect farewell gift with a 7-1 demolition job on Sinchi who ended their night with only 9 players on the pitch after Chen Xiao and Liu Bin both saw red in the second half.

The Cubs will now finish the season in third place – a far cry from their bottom placing in the previous campaign.

The first half totally belong to Agu Casmir who hit a first half hat-trick. Agu upon receiving an innocuous pass in midfield, skipped past marker Zhang Qinghua as if he wasn’t there & slammed a left-footed shot past Chen Si for the opening goal. Then Agu doubled Young Lions’ lead with a blistering shot after Mustaqim Manzur had cut the ball back from the bye-line. The striker completed his hat-trick 4 minutes before the break with a simple tap-in after Vladan Seric had flicked Shaiful Esah’s cross past Chen Si, although there could a suspicion as to whether Seric’s initial effort had already crossed the goal line.

With the game all but beyond them, the Sinchi players were content to just go through the motions in the second half. Chen Xiao then pressed the self-destruct button soon after by earning two cautions in as many minutes for needless fouls and the Young Lions made the most of their numerical advantage with substitute Jamil Ali slotting past Chen Si just inside the penalty box. Agu had to be replaced by Noor Ikhsan after suffering a minor injury but the absence of their top striker did not seem to affect Young Lions as Fadzu scored the fifth goal from Khairul Amri’s pass. To add insult to injury, Sinchi found themselves reduced to 9 men when referee Abdul Malik sent off substitute Liu Bin for a petulant kick at Shaiful at the touchline. However, Zhong Cheng pulled a goal almost immediately after Liu Bin’s dismissal by latching onto Shaiful’s suicidal back-pass before drilling a low shot past Hassan into goal. But that did not deter Young Lions as they ran riot in the dying minutes which saw Itimi & Fadzu add a couple more goals to condemn Sinchi to their worst ever defeat in the S-League.
