(Epictete) (b. c. AD 55, probably at Hierapolis, Phrygia [now Pamukkale,Turkey]--d. c. 135, Nicopolis, Epirus [Greece]), Greek philosopher associated with the Stoics, remembered for the religious tone of his teachings, which commended him to numerous early Christian thinkers.

According to the Greek thinker Apollodorus, he was born in 624; the Greek historian Diogenes Laërtius placed his death in the 58th Olympiad (548-545) at the age of 78.
