Eastern Derby – Geylang United vs Tampines Rovers

Geylang United has one of the proudest records in Singapore football with the club having won the first ever National Football League (1974), Singapore Premier League (1988) and S-league (1996) and no other clubs can boast that.

The Bedok-based club had also totally dominated the Singapore Premier League before it demise in 1995 winning 6 championships in a rows and for the entire period of the existence of the Singapore Premier League, Geylang United was the only club to represent Singapore in Asian club competition.

Tampines Rovers is one of the oldest football clubs in Singapore with it existence back in 1945 during the war-days of WW2.

The clubs became a powerhouse in Singapore football in the 1970s and 1980s as the club won 4 National Football League (1975, 1979, 1980, 1984) during that period.

In 1996 when the S-league was formed both clubs was based in the Eastern part of the Republic and right from the start the 2 clubs vowed to be Kingpin of Singapore football but Geylang United backed by their stronger management was the quicker off the block as they showed their championship qualities in winning the inaugural S-league title as well as the FA Cup even if it was Tampines Rovers who had won the first-ever meeting between the clubs 2-0.

The situation did not improved for Tampines Rovers in time as Geylang United reign supreme over their derby rival and it was not until 2002 before Tampines Rovers had a winning year – 1 win and 2 draws.

Before that time though, Geylang United had added another league title in 2001 and reached 2 Cup Final.

However football is about high and low and in 2004 Tampines Rovers achieved the League and Cup Double while Geylang United, despite reaching the semi-final of AFC Cup, slumped to a league low in finishing just above the bottom 3.

Worse was to come in 2005 as Tampines Rovers achieved not only another league title but also the ASEAN title - ASEAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - to overtake Geylang United as the most successful club in the East.

During that reign for the Stags, Tampines Rovers achieve a record 10 consecutives league win against Geylang United before it was snapped in 2008 with Brazilian forward Luiz Machado Junior scoring, which was also the 50th Eagles goal against their arch–rival but a poor statistic considering the Stags had already scored 57 against them at the point.

For Geylang United, nothing could be worse having reign supreme in the East for so long.
