Derby – Jurong vs SAFFC
Jurong was not one of the 8 pioneer clubs of the S-league in
1996 and it was a major disappointment for the club as their management had
fought for the end of Singapore involvement in the M-league and the started of Singapore
own professional league since the days of the Singapore Premier League.
The club only entered the S-league in 1997
at their second attempt but the club never captured their glory days of the
Jurong was formed in 1975 when they were known as
Then in 1988 with the formation of the
Singapore Premier League, where Jurong was chosen
again to join despite not being among the top clubs, it also saw the brief
glory days of the Jurong club as the club finished
runner-up in the League in 1989 and 1990 as well as winning the Cup Double in
1989.
SAFFC has it roots from the SAFSA team
that participated in the 1975 first-ever National Football League.
The club won the league title 3 times
(1978, 1981, 1986) along with the President Cup 4 times (1975, 1978, 1984,
1986) during the National Football League days.
Then in 1990 when the club was in the
Premier League era, the club won the FA Cup.
With the formation of the S-league, SAFFC
was given the Jurong Stadium deserted by the excluded
Jurong thus landing the ground for the Jurong Derby that was to begin when Jurong
entered the S-league in 1997.
However Jurong
was finding it difficult to match the standard set by SAFFC as SAFFC not only
captured the S-league titles 4 times (1997, 1998, 2000, 2002) and 3 Cup titles
(1997 League Cup and FA Cup, 1999 Singapore Cup) but defeated Jurong in their first 6 encounters and it took Jurong until 2000 to defeat SAFFC
While Jurong was
not a match against SAFFC in the league, they proved a formidable foe for SAFFC
in the Cup as SAFFC was send crashing out of the 2002 and 2003 Singapore Cup by
Jurong and Jurong best
moment of the S-league years were in 1999 and 2002 when the club finished as
runner-up in the Singapore Cup both times.
But disappointment were
to follow in 2003 when Jurong pulled out of the
S-league due to financial difficulties.
