Uniform Derby – Home United vs SAFFC
The rivalries of the uniform teams were
formed back in the Boggars Cup days when the uniform
teams of the Police and Army took on one another on the football pitch.
Home United traced it roots back from the 1940s
as the Police Sports Association but the club was not in the National Football
League, when it was formed in 1975, until 1979 as they were excluded.
That did not prevent the club from achieving success as the club
became the first winner of the President Cup when it debut in 1968 and
finishing runner-up in the next 2 editions.
Once in the National Football League
though, the club did not waste any time in achieving more success as they won
the Division 2 title in 1980 as well as adding another President Cup.
Promoted to Division 1, the club won their
first league title in 1985 but it was as far as their glory days got as in the
Premier League era they never got anywhere near to lifting
another trophy
For SAFFC, it roots begun from the SAFSA
team that participated in the 1975 first-ever National Football League.
The club won the league title 3 times
(1978, 1981, 1986) along with the President Cup 4 times (1975, 1978, 1984,
1986) during the National Football League days.
Then in 1990, when the club was in the
Premier League era, the club won their first Cup the 1990 FA Cup.
Wherever these 2 clubs go, there will
always be an intensive rivalry and the S-league era was no different but
strangely enough in the early years Home United found SAFFC unstoppable as Home
United lost their opening 10 encounters against SAFFC although it is unlikely
this will be repeated.
Indeed with SAFFC wining trophy after
trophy, Home United seek an answer to stop SAFFC and it took until 1999 when
under Robert Alberts they finally stop the rot with
not only their first victory against SAFFC but also a first league title.
The 2 uniform teams were to dominate the
domestic scene with 6 league championships and 7 Cup trophies and they are 2
most successful teams of the S-league.
Both clubs though will be noted for the
area they each dominated with SAFFC in domestic and Home United in
SAFFC are the most successful with 7
league championships (1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008) and 5 Cup
trophies (1997 League and FA Cup, 2000, 2007, 2008 Singapore Cup) with Home
United behind with 2 league championships (1999, 2003) and 4 Cup trophies
(2000, 2001, 2003, 2005 Singapore Cup) but in Asia it is Home United by far
ahead with one semi-final finish in 2005 AFC Cup and one quarter-final finish
in 2000 Cup Winners’ Cup while SAFFC can only speak of a quarter-final finish
in the ASEAN Club Championship.
It is unlikely the status quota will
remain unchanged as both clubs continued to look for success.
