| Matthew is another of Slough's seemingly limitless supply of under-rated juniors, so much so that last year he surprised everyone but himself in winning the Ampleforth Junior crown, and thus earning himself a place in the British Championships. He didn't quite make it to board one, but it is nonetheless useful to have such a player in the squad. As he was also being deployed for Slough 3 last season, he played only two games for the second team, a win and a loss. His loss was against John Bentley (2163), when a promising Caro-Kann turned nasty as all the tactics went against him after white's enforced piece sacrifice. The win was much more typical Harborne, eeking out a minute advantage from a slow c3 Sicilian into an ending win, as his opponent, Nick Hawkins (2063) failed to realise that the exchanges taking place were helping Harborne reach a better ending, and after a deftly played ending exchange, Hawkins resigned two pawns adrift. As Slough 2 has been boosted by a number of close-season signings, it will most likely be Harborne's job to bring Slough 3 up to the Division 3 spot that Slough 2 will leave behind... |
