| Daniel McGowan (2053) [SCO]: | ||||||||||||||
| Daniel is one of many Scottish juniors in the Slough 2 squad, and indeed is one of the highest rated juniors that Scotland have to offer. The webmaster just about managed to avoid playing Daniel in this years Hastings Challengers, but was fortunate enough to be next to his board twice in the tournament, including being around to witness his 12 (!) move checkmate of strong female player Lucy Broomfield with the black pieces. He played in just one weekend for Slough 2 last year, recording two draws, but can expect many more games this year if he is available. His first game was a careful draw against Lee Davis (2002), in which his opponent missed earlier chances to create problems and eventually could make no hedway against Daniel's excellent endgame technique. The second game, with white against Julian Allinson (1872), was an altogether different matter, with Daniel declining a short draw and trapping an impudent knight deep in enemy territory. Things turned sour when he tried to round it up, however, as one careless move undid his previous patience, and this mistake was followed by a more serious one, leaving him two pawns down with minimal chances to create confusion. Somehow he pulled out what was the only trick in the position to find perpetual check. Resourcefulness like that will be integral to the Slough quest for promotion next season. |
