| Joe played the first six games of the 02/03 season for Slough 2, and scored a very respectable 50% on top board, his only loss coming at the hands of Wales' newest IM, Leighton Williams. His first three games (all draws in under 25 moves) against C.Kennaugh (2290), N.Rutter (2120) and G.Smith (2118) are all submitted without comment, but his round four win against Leo Keely (2153) is well worth a look: Redpath offers a draw from move twelve in an ostensibly dull queen pawn position, but capitalises on his opponent's unwary approach and shows he is more than capable of playing a tactical battle if required. Keely avoids the loss of material, but Redpath smoothly converts his positional advantage to a simple ending win. The game against Williams (2349) again sees Redpath trying to demonstrate the attacking potential of his pseudo-London System setup, but the wily Welshman demonstrates the danger of leaving one's king in the centre. Some light footwork from his queen followed up by a central pawn sacrifice rips the white pawn chain apart and the king behind it cannot last longer than move 26. The last game against C.Briscoe (2187) saw Redpath wheeling out his Czech Pirc (1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 c6!? - also known as the Wade/Pribyl system) for the third time out of three with black, and he never looks in trouble, rather generously agreeing to a draw where he appears much better. More of the same will be expected from him in 2003/04. |
