| During Season # 34 we inducted two new members into the Team. In January, Joel Irvine became the ninety-seventh person to join us. He chose number eighty-seven for his playing number. On April 3, Jim Curry became Team member ninety-eight. Jim chose number four for his playing number. Both players chose to have their numbers placed on Team hats. Just before the end of the season we had the awards presentation. At 58 years of age I was very pleased to receive the 2008 "Sludge Award for Most Defensive Player." The "Sludge Award" was derived back in 1996 from my nickname. My nickname, Sludge, dates back to the early 1970s when Jim Sullivan, who was one of our earliest players, gave me the nickname. Jim always compared my shot to "sludge" because my shot was as slow as mud going up a hill. I've also been told many times by other players that my shot is so weak that it couldn't break a pane of ordinary window glass. Tim Hall, a former player, would yell out "release-the-kittens" whenever I was getting ready to shoot. Having this award named after me was quite an honour. Since its inception, I have won the award eleven times. |
