In late April we have secret ballot voting for the annual Team awards. Our oldest award is the MVP which dates back to 1977. We didn't start voting for awards until 1977 because when we started playing in 1973, we never thought that we would still be playing four years later. Our "Rookie of the Year" was first awarded in 1979. Our "Most Gentlemanly Player" was first awarded in 1986. Our most recent awards were started in 1996 and they are the "Charlie Hustle Award" and the "Sludge Award" for the Most Defensive Player.
In 1994, we changed the name of the MGP to honor one of our former rookie players and a true gentleman, who died while serving as a member of Canada's Armed Forces during the "Gulf War." The MGP is known today as the "Cory Wells, Most Gentlemanly Player Award." Cory's funeral in Halifax was attended by many of our players as Cory was well liked by everyone on the team.
The voting lasts for three weeks and then the votes have to be tabulated by two members of the Team Executive. The awards presentation takes place at our gym about two weeks before the end of the season. Each award winner receives his own individual trophy to keep plus his name is inscribed on the plaque that is associated with each individual trophy. The plaque stays in each winner's possession until early May of the following year. The award presentations are made by the Team Executive and of course pictures are taken to commemorate the event. The pictures end up in the current Team photo album. All the pictures have inscriptions below them to explain their significance. |
