JOURNAL 5: CALLED TO TAKE RISKS

1. What is the one key idea of this chapter. pay attention to the title of the chapter!

The key idea of this chapter is called to take risks in our faith. The Gospel of Luke questions us on how we respond to Jesus' love and call to love. Through responding to the Scripture, we strengthen prayer and compassionate actions. Sometimes these compassionate actions run the risk of obstacles and trials in which we must face along the way. This message of taking risks was especially important to his Gentile audience who had feared to pronounce Christianity. Luke's Gospel was also very good at interweaving history along with biblical truth of Jesus. This addition of historical events allowed for all to realize that Jesus affects all of world history. Mary is our model of risks in a commitment. Mary was only about sixteen years old when God called her to be the mother of Christ. As she excepted the wil of God, she became and servant to God through her humility. We take her as a model of a service, motherhood, and bravery through which she endured all the pains Christ suffered through a mother's eyes. Jesus stressed the importance of unity while the Sanhedrin enforced laws that separated the community. Although there was risk, Jesus brought unity to the people in God and calls us to do the same. When the risks get tough we need to remember that God is always with us and never leaves us alone.

2. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

One major idea that I want to remember is the narrative of the feeding of the five thousand. This miracle shows compassion, unity, awe, and the loving nature of Christ. Jesus had been preaching to huge crowds in great numbers for days now and the crowds grew hungry. When the Apostles came to Jesus saying they only had five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus blessed the bread and all ate and were filled. This miracle symbolizes compassion because Jesus cared for the needs of his followers and had faith in the Lord to provide for them. This narrative shows unity because the crowds, the Apostles and Jesus were all unified in a meal and all companions of one another. The love of Christ was shown in this story because Jesus loved his followers and God; he had extreme faith in God and his people which shows a loving teacher. I want to remember this idea because it is a seen expressing unity which Christ values very strongly and I should value strongly.

Another major idea that I want to remember is prayer being seen as the courage to risk. All of the Gospels, especially Luke, emphasize on prayer. We Jesus numerously praying to God for help, conversation, and just as an intimate moment. Relationship with God through prayer is extremely important and the strength it radiates to us is amazing. The Transfiguration is a huge story of prayer in which Peter, James and John witness Elijah, Moses, and Jesus in Jesus' Transfiguration. We also hear God telling us to listen to what Jesus has to say. The more we are open to God, the more God can come into our lives and allow the spirit of Christ to come within us to assist us and give us courage. I want to remember this major idea because it is important for me to know that if I need courage in surpassing a challenge, God will come into my heart and mind through prayer and give me the strength I need because I know he will never leave me.

4. One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal.

What significance is within THE FEEDING OF THE FIVE THOUSAND that can be shared in all of the evangelists' Gospels?

Possible answer: The Feeding of the five thousand shows unity, compassion, divinity, and extreme love and faith by God. The Gospel of Matthew ephasizes on the call to be like Jesus, the Gospel of Mark calls us to be compassionate, the Gospel of Mark tells us to take risks in our faith, and the Gospel of John calls us to love and Jesus' divinity. We can see all of these characteristics within the story of the feeding of the five thousand.
