Is Jesus God?
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
The Old Testament prophets spoke of the coming Messiah. Many of those passages indicate that the Messiah would be God coming in the flesh.
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
The everlasting Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
Note: Some modern translations such as NIV have mistranslated the word everlasting as from ancient times. The Hebrew word is olam which means everlasting. (See Psalm 90:2. From everlasting (olam) to everlasting (olam), Thou art God.)
Isaiah
7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel.
The Messiah would be born of a Virgin, and He would be called Immanuel, which means God with us. (see Matthew 1:23)
Note: Some modern Bibles have mistranslated the word virgin as young woman. The Hebrew word Almah means a young woman who has a veiled, or kept out of sight. When Jewish scholars translated the Old Testament into Greek (the Septuagint) they used the Greek word Parthenos, which means virgin. The Great Scholar Roshi argued that Almah meant virgin. “Behold the almah shall conceive and bare a son and shall call his name Immanuel. This means that our Creator shall be with us. And this is the sign: the one who will conceive is a girl (naarah), who never in her life has had intercourse with any man. Upon this shall the Holy Spirit have power. (Mikraoth Gdeoloth on Isaiah 7:14)
Isaiah
9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty
God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
The Messiah will be man, (a child is born). His name shall be called the Mighty God. The Mighty God is identified as Jehovah in Isaiah 10:20-21
Jeremiah 23:5-6 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
The Messiah, the Son of David, the branch of Jesse, will be called Jehovah Tsidkenu, the Lord our righteousness.
Zechariah
12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications:
and they shall look upon me whom they have
pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth
for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him,
as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
The Messiah speaking in the first person, shall be pierced. The identity of the speaker is Jehovah according to Zechariah 12:1.
Isaiah 40:3-5 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
John the Baptist proclaimed that the voice in the wilderness referred to him. (See John 1:23). He was to prepare the way for Jehovah.
Isaiah 40:9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
Isaiah 40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
The Messiah, the shepherd of Israel is identified as God. Jesus identified himself as the good shepherd. (See John 10:11)
The Old testament prophets called the Messiah, the Son of God.
Psalms 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
Psalms 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Psalms 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
The Son of God is identified as the anointed one (literally the Messiah) in verse 2. He is begotten of the Father in verse 7, and the command is given for us to put our trust in him.
Note: The Jewish Bible translates this verse 12 this way: “Do homage to the son, lest he be angry, and ye be lost on the way; for his wrath is so speedily kindled. Happy are all they that put their trust in him.” Isaac Leeser Holy Scriptures, Published by the Hebrew Publishing Company.
Proverbs 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Note: The answer to this question is found in the gospel of John.
John 9:35-37 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
The Bible commands us to worship the Messiah.
Psalms 45:11 So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.
Note: The king is the anointed (literally the Messiah) one of God.
Psalms 45:67 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Jesus accepted worship from men.
Matthew 8:2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
Matthew 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Matthew 15:25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
Matthew 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
Mark 5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
Luke 24:52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
John 5:23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
John 9:38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
The Father commands the angels to worship Jesus.
Hebrews 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
The New Testament teaches that He is God.
Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
John
1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The
same was in the beginning with God. All
things were made by him; and without him was not any
thing made that was made.
John 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Romans 9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
Note: New King James removes any ambiguity. “”Of whom are the fathers and from whom according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Note: The Almighty is identified as the one who has been raised from the dead. Revelation 1:17-18 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Acts 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
A title given to the Messiah (see Psalm 16:10).
Note: Even the demons were forced to acknowledged him as the Holy One. (Mark 1:24).
1 Timothy 6:14-16 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Revelation 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
It is speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ. (See Revelation 19:13)
1 Corinthians 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Hebrews 1:2-3 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
His enemies believed that jesus taught that he was God.
John 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
John 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Although Jesus is God the son, he is distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit. (See Daniel 7:13, Isaiah 48:16, Matthew 3:16-17, 1 John 5:7, Revelation 5:6-7).
