FACT AND OPINION.

Facts are statements that can be proven. Opinions are your own or someone’s personal views or ideas. To decide whether a statement is a fact or opinion ask yourself the following questions.

Can the statement be proven? If so, it is a fact.

Would other people disagree with this statement? Other people may agree with a statement because they are of the same opinion. However, that does not necessarily mean it is a fact.

1.Read the following statements and write whether it is a fact or an opinion. 

I.      Australia is the world’s smallest continent.

II.      Melbourne is the best city in the world in which to live.

III.      Women are more skilful motorists than men.

IV.      Cats make the best pets of all.

V.      Lizards belong to the reptile family.

VI.      Rugby is a better game than AFL football.

VII.      An oasis is a fertile spot in the desert.

VIII.      China has the largest population in the world.

IX.      The Sungai Rajang is Malaysia’s longest river.

X.      Some Malaysian birds are brightly coloured.

XI.      Pizzas are much tastier than hamburgers.

XII.      Mathematics is the most interesting of all school subjects.

XIII.      Some dogs are very loyal to their owners.

XIV.      Western Australia is the largest Australian state.

XV.      A drought describes a period with little or no rain.

XVI.      Many Australian snakes are venomous.

XVII.      A great number of creatures throughout the world have become extinct.
