"Dr. Death" Steve Williams is considered to be one of the toughest and most popular gaijin (foreign) wrestlers in Japan for 10 years. In the ring, he is a ferocious animal, but, outside of the ring, he is always one of the kindest men I've ever seen in the wrestling world.
Steve was born on Saturday, May 14, 1960. He started amateur wrestling when he was eight years old. After graduating from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Colorado in 1978, he, as an All State Football Player, was given an athletic scholarship to the University of Oklahoma . He played football (All American in 1982 and two Big Eight Conference Championships) and wrestled in the amateur ranks (All American in 1978 - 1981, Big Eight Conference Champion in 1980 - 1982, and NCAA runner-up in 1981). He appeared in major football bowl games a total of five times (Three Orange Bowls, one Fiesta Bowl, and one Sun Bowl). He wrestled with Bruce Baumgartner of Indiana State University, who would become the 1984 and 1992 Olympic Champion in free style wrestling, at the NCAA finals as a senior in college in 1982. He weighed 317 lbs. in those days. He got the nickname of "Dr Death" from the Sooners' football coach.
The USFL (United States Football League), which played its games from 1983-1985 during the spring and summer months, announced its formation on May 11, 1982. Steve played with the New Jersey Generals and Denver Gold as an offensive guard.
Steve was scouted and trained by "Cowboy" Bill Watts when he was a senior in college. He had been wrestling between football seasons. He had his first pro match with Billy Starr in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1982. As a part-time wrestler, he faced Bob Roop in a singles match and teamed with Andre the Giant against Big John Studd & Super Destroyer (Scott Irwin). Then, he became a full time wrestler after the 1983 season. He learned a lot about pro wrestling and professionalism from Ted DiBiase.
Steve came to Japan for the first time for Antonio Inoki's New Japan Pro Wrestling from July 4 to August 7, 1986. He had eight tours for New Japan Pro until the end of 1989 and wrestled for both New Japan Pro and Giant Baba's All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1990. He became a full time regular gaijin for All Japan Pro from 1991.
The tough guy's life is not all beer and skittles, but he will keep running rough and wild.
