ORDERS OF CHIVALRY

SAINT GEORGE - PATRON SAINT OF KNIGHTS

Many Web Pages are dedicated to Orders of Chivalry; Knighthood; State Honours; Dynastic Knighthood and Honours and Awards; etc. I do not intend to repeat this information in these pages, however I do hope to provide additional information with a somewhat Canadian perspective. To this end information on Canadian Associations (Priory; Delegations; Lieutenancies; etc) of various non Canadian Orders that have established branches in Canada will be presented.

In recent years a large number of so-called orders have appeared, it is not uncommon to attend a white tie or black tie affair without running accross at least one individual wearing the insignia of a order of dubious validity. In fact some of these groups go as far as to establish "international groups of experts", to sit in judgement over the orders, decorations and medals of the world, of course they include the so-called orders etc. to which they belong amongst the legitimate Orders. It should be remembered that just because some of these groups can issue a tax receipt and have corporate status it does not make them a real Order of Chivalry. The same holds true for some of these noble societies, if the head of some ancient Royal House starts giving out titles, Orders, Decorations and Medals it should be considerd no more than a joke, a former Sovereign can continue to bestow their Royal House Orders (Dynastic Honours) but they no longer have the authority or the moral legitimacy to create new ones.

In this modern age the creation of Orders, Titles, Honours and Awards of this nature belong to the realm of sovereignty.

Membership in these Orders is by invitation only, and is open to ecclesiastics as well as laymen and laywomen. These two Orders are of ancient origin and they do enjoy the official recognition of the Holy See.

While not a Papal Order, nor a Ecclesiastical Order of Knighthood of the Holy See, The Sacred and Military Constantinian Order of St. George (of the Royal House of Two Sicilies) constitutes a Catholic Dynastic Religious-Military Order of Knighthood.
