| FRACTIONS are used to represent parts of a whole. The part we are talking about is represented by the number in the numerator (the top number of the fraction). How many pieces the whole object or thing we are discussing is divided in to is represented by the number in the denominator (the bottom number of the fraction) |
| The rectangle at the left (our whole object) is divided into four parts. Therefore when we discuss the rectangle, 4 will always be in our demonimator. Three parts of the rectangle are green. Therefore when we discuss the parts of the rectangle that are green, 3 will be in the numerator. We say that 3/4 of the rectangle is green. This means that three out of the four parts of the rectangle are green. One part of the rectangle is white. Therefore when we discuss the parts of the rectangle that are white, 1 will be in the numerator. We say that 1/4 of the rectangle is white. This means that one out of the four parts of the rectangle is white. |
| CHANGING FRACTIONS TO DECIMALS AND PERCENTS The fraction bar (the line between the numerator and the denominator) is also a division sign. 2/5 means two parts out of five, but it also means 2 divided by 5 2 / 5 MEANS 2 5 |
| To change a fraction to a decimal divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). 2/5 = 2 divided by 5 = 0.4 1/4 = 1 divided by 4 = 0.25 2/3 = 2 divided by 4 = 0.6666 5/8 = 5 divided by 8 = 0.625 To change a fraction to a percent 1. first change the fraction to its decimal representation 2. then move the decimal point two places to the right 3. last write the percent sign % 2/5 = 2 divided by 5 = 0.4 = 40% 1/4 = 1 divided by 4 = 0.25 = 25% 2/3 = 2 divided by 4 = 0.6666 = 66.66% 5/8 = 5 divided by 8 = 0.625 = 62.5% Now its time to practice changing fractions to decimals.
