APPLIED  MATH I
Dividing Fractions

You do not need common denominators to divide fractions.  When dividing fractions it is best to
     1.   first rewrite all mixed numbers as improper fractions.
           EXAMPLE:  2 3/4      5/8 =
2 3/4  is an improper fraction.  2 is the whole number part, 3 is the numerator
and 4 is the denominator.  To write a mixed number as an improper fraction you
multiply the denominator 4, times the whole number 2, and add the numerator to
get the numerator of our equivalent improper fraction.  2 3/4 = 11/4
               2 3/4    8/9 =  11/4     5/8
       2.  Next rewite the first fraction of the problem but
CHANGE the division sign to
multiplication and write the RECRIPROCAL or inverse of the second fraction.

  2 3/4    8/9 =  11/4     5/8
                             =  11/4
x  8/5
       3.  Next follow the rules for
Multiplication to finish your problem
                            =   11/4  x 8/5           Note 4 divides into 4 one time and 4 divides into 8
                                                            two times
                            =  11/1   x  2/5          Multiply 11 x 2 and 1 x 5
                            =   22/ 5
                            =  4   2/5
