The Broom/Besom

The Broom is still used in modern practice today by sweeping the sacred area (inside or out) where a rite may be performed. This sweeping is more than just a physical cleansing; in fact, the bristles don't even need to touch the ground. While sweeping, visualize the broom sweeping out the astral buildup that occurs where humans live.
To make your own broom- Try the old magical formula of an ash staff, birch twiggs and a willow binding. The ash is protective, the birch purifying, and the willow is sacred to the Goddess. A tiny broom of pine needles can also be used. - Scott Cunningham
Element: Water
Spells: Love and psychic workings
Purification and Protection
Wand

The Wand is an instrument of invocation. It is used to direct energy, draw magical symbols or a circle on the ground, or even to stir the cauldron.
To make your own wand- the traditional woods include willow, elder, oak, apple, peach, hazel, cherry and so on. Some Wiccans cut it the length from the crook of the elbow to the tip of the forefinger, but this isn't necessary.
Element: Air
Censer

The censer is an incense burner. In ceremonial magic, "spirits" are sometimes asked to appear in visible form in the smoke rising from the censer. While this isn't part of Wicca, the Goddess and God can sometimes be seen in the curling, twisting smoke. Sitting while breathing slowly and watching the smoke can sometimes be an entracing act, and you might slip into an altering state of consciousness.
To make your own censer- any bowl, cup, or shell half-filled with sand or salt works well.
Element: Air
Cauldron

The cauldron is the container in which magical transformations occur; the sacred grail. It can also been seen as a symbol of the Goddess. The cauldron can be an instrument of scrying by filling it with water and gazing into it.
To make your own Cauldron- The Cauldron should be made of iron or earth material such as clay, resting on three legs, with its opening smaller than its widest part.
Element:Water
Athame (Aw-thaw-may) or "Knife"

The Athame is not used for cutting purposes in Wicca, but to direct the energy raised during rites and spells. Sometimes energy raised within Wiccan ritual is channeled into the knife for later use.
To make an Athame- The knife is often dull (though I prefer mine sharp; depends on what feels right to you), double-edged and with a black or dark handle to absorb power. However, today some witches/wiccans are using stainless steel, bone, plain wood, and clay athames.
Element: Fire
Bolline

The white-handled knife is simply a practical, working knife. It is used to cut wands or sacred herbs, inscribe symbols onto candles or on wood, clay or wax, and in cutting cords for use in magic.
To make a Bolline- Usually white-handles to distinguish it from the magic knife.
Crystal Sphere

The crystal has long been used in contemplative divination. In ritual, the crystal is sometimes placed on the altar to represent the Goddess. Also may be used to recieve messages from the Gods, or to store energy raised in ritual. Periodic exposure to moonlight, or rubbing the crystal with fresh mugwort, will increase its ability to spark our psychic power. It may be the center of Full Moon rituals.
Chalice

The cup is simply a cauldron on a stem. Can be used to hold water yet also contains the ritual beverage for the rite.
To make your own Chalice- you can use a simple wine glass. The most popular substances are silver, brass, gold, earthenware, soapstone, alabaster, crystal and other materials.
Element: Water
Pentacle

The pentacle is a flat, round piece inscribed the the pentagram; the five-pointed star. A convenient tool upon which to place amulets, charms or other objects to be ritually consecrated.
To make your own Pentacle- you can use brass, silver, gold, wood, wax, thick paper, or clay and inscribe or paint a pentacle onto it.
Element: Earth
Bell

The bell is usually used before rituals and other works of magick to call and invite certain entities (i.e. Deities, Faeries, Elementals, etc) or to simply call that the ritual has begun or ended. It is also rung to ward off evil spells and spirits, to halt storms, or to evoke good energies.
The Book of Shadows

A workbook containing invocations, ritual patterns, spells, runes, rules governing magic, etc. Books of Shadows are sometimes passed down upon initiation but most are composed by the individual.
To make your own Book of Shadows- begin with any blank book and add in your own spells, rituals, etc It is good to copy down your BOS by hand.

Personal and Sacred Space Tools...
God/Goddess Candle or Symbol

The God is usually represented by a gold or red candle, or symbol (
herb, or written sign).

The Goddess is usually represented by a silver or white candle, or a symbol (
herb, or written sign).
Elemental Symbolism

On the altar you have a red candle (or just a small white candle) which represents fire, a bowl of water, a bowl of salt (earth), and insence (air). These are not always used in the rite, but its always nice to have them on hand. There are other ways to represent the elements, these are suggestions.
Tarot Cards

Tarot cards are an excellent, easy form of divination. Predict the past present and future, and help your way through different obstacles. Each deck is unique and has some special quality, some people use celtic forms, celtic tree tarot, pagan decks, traditional decks, fancy decks, goddess decks, and many more. The deck has to "click" really with the owner. With my cards I can not make accurate readings for myself, but very well for others. I have the traditional deck.
The altar is the most sacred and personal space for prayer, meditation, and magick. Your altar must be chosen in a place that will not be disturbed by any energy but your own. On this page you will find a selection of tools many practicioners like to have, these are, however, suggestions. Magick manifests by energy, these tools have just been discovered to aid in the direction of these energies. You can create and add anything to your altar to add your own magickal touch there are no boundaries.
