There was only one way to get anything done - by force. But then he met a woman who would change his life forever. In the hope of one day living in a world that he could share with Brenda Barrett, Sonny determined that there was another way to accomplish things - his way. In 1993, Sonny was living with his ward, Stone Cates, above the Paradise Lounge strip bar. When he met pretty teenager Karen Wexler, he dared her to take it all off - and she did. Sonny began an affair with his newest attraction and fought to keep her for himself even as she descended deeper into the throes of drug addiction. At one point, after ordering a hit on Karen's estranged boyfriend, Jagger Cates, who wanted to get her back on the straight and narrow, Sonny even threatened Karen herself. After the Port Charles police closed down the Paradise Lounge for employing minors like Karen and Stone, Sonny became the front man for mobster Frank Smith, Luke Spencer's longtime nemesis. When Frank was killed, Sonny bluffed his way through a mob war with Puerto Rican gangster Rivera so beautifully that he wound up taking over all of Frank's holdings. At the same time, romance was blossoming between Sonny and model Brenda Barrett. The unlikely duo were crazy about one another and even went so far as to move in together. But Brenda was suspicious of Sonny's mob ties, and in 1995, she agreed to wear a wire when she investigated her fears. Lily Rivera tipped off her friend, Sonny, to Brenda's plan, and the couple broke up - each of them feeling betrayed by the other. That same year, Sonny was reunited with his estranged father, Mike Corbin. In 1996, in exchange for Rivera's help in getting racketeering charges against him dropped, Sonny agreed to marry his confidante, Lily. Although Sonny cared for his new bride, his heart still belonged to Brenda. He was about to break it to Lily that he was leaving her when she told him that she was pregnant with his child. Tragedy struck shortly thereafter when Lily was killed by a car bomb that her father intended to blow up Sonny. In his grief and shame, Rivera killed himself, in the process, making Sonny the new crime boss of Port Charles. Brenda came to Sonny in his hour of need, but she was not free to resume their relationship. She had married suave Australian financier Jax. Sonny didn't trust Jax from the getgo and endeavored to dig up some dirt on his rival. What he found was Jax's long-lost wife, Miranda Jameson, whom he brought to disrupt Brenda and Jax's renewal of their vows ceremony. It worked - to a point. Brenda called off the event but not the marriage. In 1997, when Sonny and Brenda were trapped together in the catacombs beneath Port Charles and certain they were going to die, they gave in to the passion that had smoldered beneath their surface feelings for so long and made love. Sonny and Brenda became a full fledged couple and planned on getting married. Sonny, however, realized that Brenda would never be truly safe at his side and made the ultimate sacrifice when he left her standing at the altar. Sonny then lived in a self imposed exile on his island in the Caribbean. Sonny returned to Port Charles at the urging of Jason to settle some unrest within the organization. Once back in town, Sonny decided to stay and take back control of his business with Jason. Sonny was taken aback one day when he met Hannah Scott, a young woman who greatly resembled Brenda. Sonny quickly entered into a romance with Hannah and was outraged to discover that she was really an FBI agent assigned to bring him down. Sonny ended his relationship with Hannah and refused to believe that she had ever truly loved him. This sent Sonny on a downward emotional spiral which resulted in him having a one night stand with Carly. Sonny and Jason's friendship was destroyed by this betrayal and Sonny was further convinced that he only brought pain to those he cared about. Sonny soon suspected that Carly was pregnant with his child and his suspicions were confirmed. Carly and Sonny didn't like each other one bit, but Sonny made it clear to Carly that he was going to be a part of his child's life and announced that he was the father of her baby in front of the Quartermaines. AJ vowed to make Carly's life miserable and refused to give her a divorce or leave the mansion with Michael. Having no one else to turn to, Carly went to Sonny for help. Sonny contacted Jason who told him about AJ hiring an arsonist to burn down the coffee warehouse. Armed with this information, Sonny confronted AJ and made him sign a document granting Carly a divorce and full custody of Michael. Sonny then insisted that Carly and Michael move in with him at his penthouse. Sonny and Carly were far from friends, but both were surprised by the easy rapport that developed between them. After sharing a kiss, Carly and Sonny made love. Sonny then shocked Carly by insisting they get married before their child was born. Carly refused to marry Sonny, but eventually accepted his ring. Carly and Sonny continued to grieve for their baby, but eventually bonded over their loss. Carly wanted revenge against AJ, but Sonny stopped her from shooting him at the Nurses Ball. Carly was falling apart emotionally and Sonny took her and Michael to his island paradise for some relaxation. The trip worked wonders for Carly and she and Sonny became lovers again. Carly was hopeful for a future with Sonny, but became heartbroken when she overheard Sonny refer to her and Michael as being obligations. Carly wanted Sonny to be with her because he wanted to, not because he thought he had to. Sonny and Carly remained at odds couldn't bring themselves to say what the other wanted to hear. During this time, Mike racked up a huge gambling debt with Sorel and turned to Carly for help. Sorel contacted Sonny, who agreed to a meeting. Thinking she was doing the right thing, Carly secretly went to the meeting place and was stunned when Sonny arrived. The police had also been tipped off and Sonny and Carly were both arrested! Alexis got Sonny released from jail but his problems were far from over. Alexis explained to Sonny that Carly would be the prosecutions star witness and both Alexis and Sonny knew that Carly would be a loose cannon on the stand. Sonny was then shocked when Alexis said he had to marry Carly to prevent her from testifying. Carly was stunned when Sonny announced that the only way to keep her off the witness stand was for them to get married. Carly told Sonny that she couldn't marry without love and Sonny was unable to admit to Carly that he loved her. Carly later agreed to marry Sonny, who promised they would try to make a happy home together. Carly and Sonny were then married as planned. Sonny and Carly began to warm up to each other and later shared a passionate kiss. Sonny and Carly continued to dance around their true feelings for one another. Slowly, Sonny and Carly started to make a real connection and when Sonny learned that Mike was missing, he allowed Carly to help him deal with his pain. Sonny learned that the charges against him had been dropped and that there wouldn't be a trial after all, but he and Carly mutually agreed to stay married. Sonny, Carly and Michael had actually formed a happy little family! Sonny and Carly were happily married and living at the penthouse with Michael. One day, Carly was grabbed by Sorel's men, but was quickly rescued by Sonny. Mob violence was once again brewing in Port Charles as Sonny found himself on the brink of a war with Sorel. Sonny had convinced Zander to testify against Sorel and it was just a matter of time before Sorel took action. Sonny warned Carly that Sorel's threats were increasing but promised to always protect her. Soon thereafter, Sonny learned that Sorel was plotting to kill him. Sonny kept this news from Carly and then shocked her by announcing that he was going to Puerto Rico. Before leaving, Sonny promised Carly that he would be home in time for Christmas. Carly was beside herself with worry for Sonny and was very relieved when he returned home. Carly's happiness was shattered, however, when Sonny was shot by Sorel's men on the steps of the police department as he was escorting Alexis and Zander out of the building. Alexis told Carly that Sonny had declared his love for Carly before losing consciousness. Carly stayed by Sonny's bedside and urged him to live. Carly also told an unconscious Sonny that she loved him. While unconscious, Sonny had an out of body experience and traveled to the other side where he visited Lily and the children he had lost. An emotional Sonny told Lily that he was in love with Carly and wasn't ready to stay on the other side with her. Sonny then returned and made a full recovery. Sonny and Carly were more in love than ever and Sonny asked Carly to marry him again in a way that showed their true feelings for one another. Carly and Sonny flew to Martinique to renew their wedding vows. Carly still feared for Sonny's safety and encouraged him to go into the witness protection program. Sonny again felt betrayed by Carly and they separated. Sonny's arch enemy, Sorel, stabbed Sonny. While bleeding to death, Sonny ended up on Angel Ellis' doorstep. Angel nursed him back to health. Sonny was surprised to learn that Angel was Sorel's long lost daughter. When Sorel took Alexis and Zander hostage, Sonny walked in wearing a bomb that went off and injured Zander. Even though Carly and Sonny were estranged, Carly agreed to allow Sonny to legally adopt her son Michael. Alexis and Sonny formed an unlikely friendship while she legally represented him. But their platonic friendship quickly turned into romance one night when the sexual tension escalated and they made love. Unbeknownst to Sonny and Alexis, Carly walked in on their post coital bliss and as a result of her surprise, she got into a car accident and was presumed dead. But she surprised everyone when she showed up very much alive to her own memorial service. Sonny and Carly reconciled, but Alexis soon found out she was pregnant. Fearing for her unborn child's life, Alexis asked Ned to claim the child as his own. Unfortunately Alexis' sister Kristina got caught in the cross fire when she went to Sonny to tell him he was the father of Alexis' baby. She was killed in an explosion intended for Sonny. Sonny was taken by surprise when a presumed dead Brenda Barrett showed up in Port Charles. Sonny was able to come to terms with his feelings for Brenda and knew that his heart belonged to Carly. On the eve of Brenda's wedding to Jax, Carly witnessed an innocent goodbye kiss between Sonny and Brenda. She assumed the worst, went on a drinking binge, and ended up the next morning naked in bed with Sonny's half brother Ric Lansing. Carly soon found out she was pregnant and was terrified that the baby could be Ric's. Unable to keep the secret any longer she told Sonny the truth and found Ric's true motivation for blackmailing Carly. Sonny was not thrilled when he discovered his best friend Jason and his half sister were in love. But after dealing with his anger, he gave his support to their relationship. They planned their wedding, but it was never able to happen because Carly was kidnapped before the ceremony. Sonny soon realized that Ric was the perpetrator but by the time Sonny and Jason got to the panic room where Ric was keeping Carly, Alcazar had already taken her. In exchange for Carly he wanted Sonny to allow him to bring drugs through his territory. Sonny reluctantly agreed, but then Alcazar took Courtney after he let Carly go. When Carly and Sonny got back to Port Charles, it was obvious that Alcazar had become obsessed with Carly. He even hired a woman who looked like his dead wife Lily to haunt Sonny and drive him crazy. Sonny felt betrayed by Carly when she admitted to helping save Alcazar's life and then lying to Sonny about it. Sonny feared for his wife and children's safety and bought her a house in the country for them to live in separate from Sonny. Carly was alone in the house one stormy night and went into labor. When Sonny finally made it to the house to help Carly, he found Alcazar hovering over a screaming Carly. Thinking he was hurting her, Sonny shot him with a bullet that went through Alcazar and into Carly's brain. She delivered Morgan safely, but slipped into a coma. During the coma, she dreamt of an alternate life with Alcazar where he was a professor. Alcazar was the only person that Carly responded to while in the coma which infuriated Sonny even more. Desperate to save Carly, Sonny left the mob and gave the business to Jason to run. Carly finally woke from her coma, but she was not the same person. She soon realized that although she remembered everyone in her life, she did not remember the love she felt for her family including Sonny. Sonny tried to be supportive as he could, but he could not help but feel frustrated. He took Carly and the kids to his island where she finally confessed to Sonny that she could not remember her love for him. Angry and hurt, Sonny took off to Port Charles to confront Alcazar. But Carly knew where he was going so she contacted Alcazar to warn him that Sonny was coming. But she was too late and Alcazar set Sonny up for shooting him. Sonny took off and hijacked a car that Sam McCall was driving. Sam and Sonny connected when Sonny confessed to her about his feelings of anger and betrayal he felt for Carly. Sonny was arrested but Sam would not press charges because she felt bad for Sonny. Carly convinced Sonny to go on the run, but he knew he had to face the charges that were waiting for him in Port Charles. He was found not guilty and Sonny and Carly resumed their life together. One night Sonny went to get on his private plane on a business trip, Sam came running onto the plane after shots were fired at her. Sonny then took her to a remote island to protect her. But due to a fuel leak, they were forced to spend the night in a shack together. While Sonny was out of town, Carly still could not get thoughts of Alcazar out of her head. So she checked herself into a mental hospital to cure her feelings for him. But when she came back, she found out that Sonny was going to go after Alcazar. She felt compelled to warn him. When Sonny found out where Carly went, he assumed she slept with Alcazar. So, when he ran into Sam McCall on the docks, he retaliated against Carly and slept with Sam. Carly went to find Sonny and walked in on him and Sam in bed together. So she immediately went straight to Alcazar and they made love. Now Sonny and Carly were as far apart as they ever could be. Sonny felt pure anger at Carly for sleeping with Alcazar. He asked Sam to be his mistress although he could not promise her any sort of relationship. After the Port Charles Hotel fire, Carly agreed to move back into the penthouse for the sake of Morgan and Michael. She and Sonny were also hoping to begin reconciliation. But unfortunately this was put on hold when Sonny found out Sam was pregnant with his child. To protect Sonny's family, Jason offered to claim the child as his own. Sonny reluctantly agreed and Sam moved into Jason's penthouse. Of course Carly was not completely fooled, she continued to suspect that Sam's is carrying Sonny's child. Ultimately Sonny could no longer keep the truth from Carly and told her that Sam is carrying his child. After a lot of thought, Carly agreed to forgive Sonny and they finally made love. As Sonny and Carly continue to work on their relationship, more secrets come out that force Sonny to act. Carly tells Sonny that John Durant is her father. This doesn't sit well with Sonny but he allows Carly to pursue a relationship with her father. Carly then reveals another bombshell: Kristina is Sonny's daughter (in the hopes that he can be a bone marrow donor). Sonny can't believe Carly lied to him and he decides their marriage is over. Sam's pregnancy is a difficult one and she ends up losing her baby. Sonny is presented with the idea that the unborn baby's stem cells can save Kristina. Sonny allows for the operation and Kristina is saved. Sonny makes it clear to Alexis that he will fight her now for custody of his daughter. Durant is determined to drive Sonny out of Carly's life. Durant has Sonny arrested on RICO charges, but thanks to a fire in Ric's apartment, the damaging evidence is thought to be destroyed. It becomes clear that Alexis has stolen the evidence and plans on using it to blackmail Sonny into giving her full custody of Kristina. At the custody trial, Sonny tries to make peace with Alexis, but she will have no part in that. Much to Alexis' chagrin, Ric's cross examination makes Sonny out to be the favorable parent for Kristina. When Durant comes forward and admits the damaging evidence was obtained illegally, the charges against Sonny and Jason are dropped. Sonny makes it clear to Alexis that the battle for Kristina is on. During the custody trial, all are shocked when Sonny offers to share custody of Kristina. Alexis initially rejects this offer but Ric talks her into. The court awards unlimited visitation to Sonny while Alexis retains full custody. Sonny has a real moment with Kristina when Alexis introduces her to daddy. Sonny decides to take a vacation with the kids while his new home is being set up. But someone has stolen keys to the new place and compromised the security system. All of Sonny's children are kidnapped. Durant calls in Reese Marshall, a FBI agent who specializes in kidnapping, to help find the kids. Sonny messes up the ransom drop but finds out Faith is the one behind the kidnapping. Jason and Sam find clues that lead them to Louisiana. After a shootout with Faith, Sonny eventually gets Kristina and Morgan back, but Michael is still missing. Jason and Sam start looking into Faith's activities and find out she had something going in the Caribbean. Sonny admits his criminal background to Reese in the hope that she can figure out who Faith's mystery partner is. But before they can go any further, Faith is shot and killed. Jason and Sonny track down the sniper and found a Polaroid of Michael, dead. Reese tries to reason with Sonny about taking out revenge on his enemies, but grief has blinded Sonny. Someone has to pay. Sonny finds out that a local crime family had the sniper on payroll. Sonny arranges for a major hit while he is at the dedication of park memorial for Michael. Sonny and Reese continue to get to know each other. Reese's new assignment is to take down Sonny but she's falling in love with him. She's having a hard time completing the assignment. When Reese comes into possession of evidence regarding Sonny's involvement in the mob hit, she decides to give it to Sonny and to leave town. Reese's car is blown up and Sonny saves her. Sonny takes Reese into his home for her own protection. They continue to grow closer. When Carly gets word from Jason that Michael is alive, she rushes over to tell Sonny. She is shocked when she finds Sonny and Reese in a rather compromising position and leaves. Sonny tracks Carly down, after figuring out what she saw. Carly tells Sonny about Michael and AJ. Sonny confronts Alan and Monica with the news but they give him nothing. Jason and Sonny work with Skye to find AJ. But it's Monica that alerts them that AJ has shown up at the Quartermaine house. While Jason deals with AJ, Sonny and Carly try to reach out to a very confused Michael. Michael runs away from them. They catch up with him in the house as Jason and AJ fall over the staircase railing. Michael is very confused over the recent traumatic events. Reese is able to make progress with Michael and Sonny is very thankful for that. When Michael realizes that he killed AJ, Sonny does what he is necessary to protect his son. Sonny claims he killed AJ. With Sonny's background, the trial doesn't seem to be going in his favor until Ric makes a summation supporting Sonny. Sonny is ultimately found not guilty. Reese is ready to leave town as she sees Sonny & Carly's bonds run very deep, but Sonny begs her to stay. Reese has secrets of her own that could destroy Sonny. Ric encourages Reese to stay and go forward with Sonny. Sonny attends Courtney and Jax's wedding with Reese which doesn't sit well with Carly. Sonny overhears Carly admitting to Alcazar that she's over Sonny and wants to marry Alcazar. Sonny returns to Reese and makes it clear he only wants to be with her now. Michael has a hard time dealing with his parents' new relationships. Reese tells Sonny that she's leaving town. Sonny finds out that Reese's action are a result of Sam's advice. After blowing up at Sam, Sonny finds Reese has had a car accident. While recovering from the accident, Reese gets a visit from an old friend, Evan, who blackmails her for $1 million dollars or he tells everyone she's really Charlotte Roberts, Carly's old high school friend. Reese eventually tells Sonny about Evan (but not about who she really is). Sonny has Reese set up a meeting with Evan. Reese sneaks out early and finds Evan dead. When Sonny and Jason arrive, Ric tells them he killed Evan in self-defense. Sonny almost finds out the truth about Reese when he catches her looking at her old yearbook. But Reese is able to distract him with talk about her living situation. Sonny offers his old penthouse to Reese and she gladly accepts. When Carly finds out about this, she's furious. Michael continues to have issues with his parents and their respective partners. Michael smashes a picture of himself after seeing Sonny going over to see Reese. Sonny explains to Michael he's not mad at him and loves him no matter what. Sonny thinks Michael should continue his therapy sessions with Dr. Thomas. Sonny arranges to have Dr. Thomas checked out and finds out that the good doctor has high opinions of himself. Sonny continues to allow Michael to see Dr. Thomas. Sonny gets a call from Reese that someone knocked out her out at the penthouse. Sonny figures out it was Carly and is ready to deal with her. Jason tries to explain that there may be something to Carly's suspicions about Reese. Sonny wants Jason to back off Reese or find another employer. Sonny gets invited to Carly's charity event at Alacazar's home. He takes Reese as his date. Much to everyone's surprise, Carly and Reese are wearing the same dress. Reese and Carly get into a fight and Reese dumps a drink on Carly. Sonny tries to reason with Carly that they have to get along for Michael's sake which Carly agrees is the best thing. Reese and Sonny are ready to go but a hurricane has rolled into town, trapping them in Alacazar's home.
