Raised by adoptive parents in Puerto Rico, Adriana never knew her biological parents. She came to Llanview to stay with Carlotta in the summer of 2003 and met River Carpenter. The two quickly fell in love, a union which Carlotta did not approve of. Carlotta did everything in her power to separate Adriana and River, finally whisking her out of town under mysterious circumstances. Adriana had been sent back to Puerto Rico to attend school. River tried in vein for months to find her, finally locating her and sneaking her back to Llanview. Dorian, River's adoptive grandmother, had been searching for Adriana for her own purposes. When Dorian tracked River and Adriana down, she shocked them by announcing to Adriana that she was her biological mother. Adriana received another surprise when she learned that, as Dorian's daughter (and the only unmarried Cramer woman with no children), she stood to inherit $30 million from Dorian's Aunt Betsy. Unbeknownst to Adriana, this was all part of a scheme on Dorian's part to get her hands on Aunt Betsy's inheritance. However, it was later revealed Dorian really was Adriana's biological mother, and was forced to give her up to protect her from her crime lord father, Manuel Santi. Adriana soon had more additions to her family when her mysterious half brother, Tico Santi came to town. Adriana was excited when Antonio Vega discovered he was also Manuel's son, making him Adriana's half-brother. Adriana's relationship with River turned more serious when they decided to make love. Unfortunately the couple failed to use protection, and Adriana soon had a pregnancy scare. Matters were further complicated when Adriana caught River sleeping with flirtatious Shannon McBain. Adriana broke up with River and he left Llanview to study music at Julliard. During the pregnancy ordeal, Adriana grew closer with Dorian, who supported and comforted her daughter throughout. Both were relieved when a test proved Adriana was not pregnant. Adriana began dating Duke Buchanan and the two have grown close despite their respective family rivalries. Recently, Adriana followed Duke to Argentina where Asa, Duke's great-grandfather, was in hiding. While there, the pair was chased by Argentinean thugs, after overhearing a covert conversation between Asa and criminal Carlo Hesser, which led them to believe Asa wanted Carlo to kill Adriana. They are currently working together to get back to Llanview.
