This smooth operator has sewn up relationships with more women than a matchmaker, yet the one constant in his life is a woman - his wife, Monica. He's lived without her; he just can't love without her. In 1978, even though he was afraid that Monica still loved Dr. Rick Webber, Alan took her to be his wife. Alan was going to divorce Monica in 1982, but he soon realized that she was the only woman who aroused him. After faking his own death in 1986, Alan developed amnesia and began a new life calling himself Simon. Suffering from a mid-life crisis, Alan ill advisedly wed Lucy Coe. In 1991, Alan remarried Monica. Alan accidentally killed bruiser Ray Conway in 1993. After having his hand operated on in 1996, Alan developed an addiction to pain killers. Being a Quartermaine, number-one son Alan learned early on, meant several things: being browbeaten, being discounted and generally dissed. One woman - his wife, Monica - not only understands those special pressures that Alan is under, she contributes to them! Alan arrived in Port Charles from Southampton in 1977 as the guest of Dr. Rick Webber, who needed someone to fund the new cardiac wing of General Hospital. Although Alan wrapped up his business in town the following year, he couldn't wrap up his relationship with Dr. Monica Webber, and so, he made Port Charles his new home. Alan married Monica in 1978, but he was haunted by the fear that she still was in love with her old flame, Rick. Thinking that Monica and Alan's son, Alan Jr., was actually Rick's child, Alan plotted to murder the lovers in 1980. At the last minute, realizing he'd be the only suspect, Alan saved their lives. A year later, with his and Monica's marriage in terrible disrepair, Alan began an affair with Susan Moore, who bore him a second child, Jason. Alan was all ready to divorce Monica in 1982 when he became impotent; it turned out, the only woman who could arouse him was his own wife. In 1986, Alan and his whole family were thrown out of their home by Monica, who had bankrupted them with her lover and partner in crime Sean Donnelly. Attempting to frame Sean, Alan faked his own murder and disappeared to Pautuck, N.Y., where he assumed a new identity, Simon. After a blow to the head left Alan thinking he really was simple Simon, Monica fell in love with him all over again. After Alan sabotaged Monica's bid to become the assistant chief of staff of General Hospital, she retreated to a spa, and he fell prey to the charms of Lucy Coe, who gleefully announced that she was expecting a Quartermaine heir (which she later miscarried). Once Alan had divorced Lucy, he reconciled with and remarried Monica in 1991. It wasn't long, though, before another woman entered the picture: Rhonda Wexler, the alcoholic mother of Jason's girlfriend, Karen. Although Alan and Rhonda weren't actually having an affair, he was very protective of her. In 1993, he went so far as to kill, albeit accidentally, her old boyfriend, Ray Conway, who had beaten her and abused Karen. When Monica underwent a mastectomy in 1994, Alan was right there for her, although she wasn't sure if she wanted him to be. Alan supported Monica's decision to take in Emily, the daughter of her friend, cancer victim Page Bowen, but that wasn't all that Monica needed. She felt ugly and succumbed to the advances of their colleague, Dr. Pierce Dorman. Even after Alan learned of the affair - and while Dorman falsely accused her of sexual harassment - his devotion to his wife didn't waver. However, he was not too pleased when his nephew, Ned Ashton, revealed during Monica's sexual harassment trial that he had an affair with her at Green Meadows spa. Alan became addicted to pain killers after Dorman had operated on the hand he had injured from one of his attempts to kill Monica and Rick many years ago. Alan had hoped that the operation would allow him to become a surgeon again. Alan's plans were put on hold when the stress of being a Quartermaine, from Monica's trial, to Emily's overdose to AJ's problems and Michael's kidnapping -- made him crave more pain pills. Alan's addiction grew to the point of being banished from his family, and losing his position at the hospital, before he finally put himself into rehab. Alan returned from rehab and reconciled with Monica. Alan also set out to reclaim his position at the hospital, which he successfully did. Alan and Monica both continue to be involved in the lives of their children and neither one was happy when Emily fell heads over heels in love with Juan Santiago. Not wanting to push Emily away, Monica and Alan allowed Emily to continue her friendship with Juan. Alan and Monica also had their share of troubles with AJ, who went into a downward spiral after his marriage to Carly crumbled. Although concerned about AJ's drinking and worried over his mental state, Monica and Alan refuse to turn their backs on their son. Alan and Monica were beside themselves with worry when Emily was kidnapped by a drug dealer named Zander. As it turned out, Zander was just another one of Sorel's victims and Emily wasn't in any real danger from him. In fact, Emily saw Zander's true colors and they formed a deep bond. Alan and Monica were greatly relieved when Jason brought Emily home safe and sound. Alan and Monica were then stunned when Emily defended Zander and made it clear to her family that she would anything she could to help him. Alan and Monica feared for Emily's safety after Sonny was shot when Sorel's men made an attempted hit on Zander. Emily still refused to stop seeing Zander and thinking they had no other choice, Alan and Monica sent Emily away to boarding school. Emily quickly ran away from school with Zander by her side, but they soon returned to Port Charles. Alan and Monica are still determined to keep Emily safe and were dealt another blow when Emily announced that she was moving out of the mansion and into Kelly's. Alan was surprised to learn from his old flame Rae Cummings that he had a long lost daughter Skye Chandler. It didn't take long for Alan to try to make up for lost time with his daughter. The both shared their pain over chemical addiction and Alan continued to support Skye while she continued to battle alcoholism. Alan and Monica were forced to deal with another unfortunate situation when their adopted daughter Emily was diagnosed with breast cancer. Emily moved back into the Quartermaine mansion where they could keep an eye on her. Alan and Monica were a huge support to Emily while she went through therapy. Luckily Emily survived the cancer scare and is now in remission. When Alan's father, Edward was accused of being responsible for the Port Charles Hotel fire, Alan tried to support his father, and luckily all charges were eventually dropped. Alan was not thrilled when his sister Tracy showed up in Port Charles with her teenaged son, Dillon in tow. Tracy also came with some interesting news for Alan and Skye, that Skye was not in fact Alan's daughter. Rae had lied about Skye's father. In Alan's mind this did not change their relationship and he continued to love and support Skye as his own daughter. Alan was surprised to find out that AJ had drained the Quartermaine accounts and had taken off with the money. The Q's were happy when Emily along with her fiancé Nikolas found out there was a sunken ship in the Port Charles Harbor that contained a treasure that partly belonged to the Quartermaines. But since the Cassadine ship was sitting on top of the Quartermaine sunken ship, Helena insisted that the money belonged to her family. Alan and Monica agreed to split the treasure for Emily's sake, but Tracy had her own plans to steal the treasure. Alan and the rest of the Q's finally came together to mourn the passing of his beloved mother, Lila Quartermaine.
