In 1989, he killed Ziggy Martinez in self-defense. Antonio was sent to prison for seven years, during which time he received his GED and a college degree. Bo Buchanan approached Antonio about getting an early release in exchange for Antonio doing undercover work for the Llanview police department. Bo wanted Antonio to infiltrate the gangs of Angel Square and discover which Llanview cop was selling stolen guns to them. Antonio worked with police detective Andrea "Andy" Harrison on the case, and eventually caught the culprit, Detective Nick Manzo. In the process, Andy and Antonio fell in love. Nick realized Antonio and Andy were onto him, so he framed Andy as the dirty cop, while pinning Antonio as her accomplice. Things got even bleaker when Andy shot a gang member who was about to kill Antonio's brother Cristian. Andy stood trial for murder, while Antonio worked desperately to try to clear them both. Eventually Antonio tricked Nick into confessing and the two young lovers were cleared. Antonio sought out a loan from manipulative Carlo Hesser in order to buy his mother Carlotta a diner. Indebted financially to Carlo, Antonio began to work for him. He was forced to lie to Andy since Carlo's activities were often illegal. Andy soon learned that Antonio was working for Carlo and debated on what to do. Meanwhile, Antonio sought counsel with Bo on how to get out of Carlo's debt, and Bo suggested going undercover to get information on Carlo. However, to do so, Antonio couldn't tell anyone of his plans-not even Andy. This caused major strains for the couple and they eventually split. When the truth came out that Antonio was working undercover, they reunited. Carlo was killed and Antonio was charged with the murder. Andy found evidence relating to Carlo's murder, and thanks to a complicated series of events, was forced to testify against Antonio. The two weathered the storm and Antonio was cleared of all charges when Carlo's real murderer, Alex Olanov, was identified. Alex took Andy hostage, and a brave Antonio rescued her. The two were greeted with happy news when new evidence clearing Antonio of his original murder conviction arose. Blissful, Antonio proposed to Andy and she accepted. Antonio also won a grant to attend law school. The two wed and moved to California, where Antonio had plans to attend Berkeley. Antonio returned to Llanview in 1998. He had divorced Andy, who had cheated on him with her partner on the police force. Antonio began a relationship with Roseanne Delgado, who had just divorced Cristian. Having dropped his law school aspirations, Antonio entered the police academy, where he was partnered with Sophia Pellegrino. Sophia began to fall in love with Antonio, which infuriated Roseanne. Antonio remained oblivious to Sophia's true feelings, while Roseanne continued to scheme against her-including not giving Antonio a message that nearly resulted in Sophia getting killed. This, combined with Roseanne acting as a spy for RJ Gannon within the police department, prompted Antonio to break up with her. Now a full member of the police force, Antonio was taking a class at Llanview University, where he became enchanted with his new professor, Keri Reynolds. Keri resisted her attraction to Antonio because of the University's strict rules against a teacher and a student getting involved. Finally the two gave into their attraction and began a relationship (Antonio had since ended the class). They encountered a new obstacle when they learned who Keri's biological father was: RJ, who had an adversarial relationship with Antonio. Keri found herself torn between the man she loved and her father. Carlotta also had a hard time accepting Keri, as she was not pleased her son was involved with RJ's daughter. RJ lied that Keri was his alibi during the time that Allison Perkins and Lindsay Rappaport escaped from prison (RJ helped them). Antonio was determined to prove he was lying, which set him in direct conflict with Keri. The two broke up, and a depressed Antonio had a one night stand with a woman named Liz. He was shocked when Liz came to Llanview and turned out to be Keri's mother! Antonio and Liz kept their secret, but Liz turned out to be pregnant. She told everyone it was another man's baby. Liz was unable to carry the baby because of a heart condition, so Keri agreed to act as a surrogate, unaware that she was carrying Antonio's child inside her. Antonio figured out the baby was his and planned to tell Keri when her doctors warned Antonio that Keri was going to have a risky pregnancy, and stress of any kind could compromise her health. Eventually RJ learned that truth and planned to tell his daughter, but Antonio decided that he needed to be the one to come clean. He told Keri, who was devastated and went into premature labor. She gave birth to a baby girl, Jamie. The doctors revealed stunning information that they had just discovered-Jamie was actually Antonio's baby with Keri! She was already pregnant when they attempted to act as a surrogate for her mother, which was not a success. Keri kept the news from Antonio and left town with her mother and the baby. Antonio was devastated when he received word that Keri, Liz and the baby died in a plane crash. Antonio fell into a deep depression, but slowly came out as he grew closer with Jessica Buchanan. Saving her from her biological father Mitch's various machinations, the two fell in love. Keri returned to town with her baby Jamie, shocking Antonio by telling him they never got on the plane. Keri wanted to reconcile with Antonio, and revealed that Jamie was their daughter together. Despite this, Antonio was committed to his love for Jessica and rejected Keri. Furious, Keri plotted revenge and made it appear as if Antonio had hit her in a fit of rage. RJ helped his daughter by making it appear as if Antonio had purposely caused a car accident Keri and RJ were involved in. Keri took Antonio to court for custody of Jamie, but Antonio ended up getting joint custody. Further unhinged, Keri killed herself, but RJ pocketed the suicide note to frame Antonio for the murder. Antonio's badge was taken away, but Jessica eventually helped him prove his innocence. Jessica also helped Antonio cope with the death of Cristian, who had been seemingly killed after getting involved in a sting with a crime lord. When Antonio learned that his mother Carlotta was the sister of notorious crime lord Manuel Santi, he went undercover to investigate the Santi crime family. During his investigation he met bar owner Sonia Toledo, who he thought was a Santi operative. Together they went to Puerto Rico in search of the Santi millions, but instead came face to face with Tico Santi, the late Manuel Santi's son. Sonia revealed that she was raised with Tico and the two made a permanent home in Llanview. Their presence created conflict when it became clear Tico and Sonia had their sights set on Jessica and Antonio, respectively. Soon Antonio was introduced to their governess, Angelina, who he sensed an odd connection with. His suspicions of the Santi family continued to escalate, especially when he was convinced Tico was the enigmatic El Tiburon- the new head of the Santi clan. When Antonio found out Sonia was actually an INL agent, the two grew closer in their shared goal of bringing El Tiburon down. His close ties with Sonia, and her obvious attraction to him caused a major rift with Jessica. After the mysterious death of Angelina, Antonio's investigation led to the discovery that she was actually Isabella Santi- wife of Manuel. In a letter to Antonio, Isabella confessed that he was her first born son, and thus, Manuel Santi II. The realization of his true identity rocked Antonio to the core, and he soon isolated himself from those he was closest to. Jessica was incredibly distraught by their separation, and ended up marrying Tico. Antonio and Jessica learned that Tico was responsible for Cristian's death. Antonio was stunned when Cristian, very much alive, returned to Llanview, and the two joined forces to bring Tico down. Tico tried to blackmail Antonio into shooting the Governor at the State of the State address, but Antonio shot Tico instead. In retaliation, Tico stabbed Jessica. Tico fell into a coma, and died when someone pulled the plug on him. Antonio became a prime suspect, and Jessica, who had witnessed the murder, eventually fingered Antonio for the crime. Despite this, Antonio remained committed to trying to work things out with Jessica. When someone began stalking her, Antonio vowed to protect her. Jessica suspected Cristian, but Antonio refused to believe it. Cristian was revealed as the person that killed Tico, and announced that he was not Cristian at all, but rather an amnesiac imposter who had been brainwashed to kill Antonio. Cristian's wife Natalie managed to stop him from killing Antonio, and Cristian was sent to prison. Unbeknownst to Antonio, the imposter really was Cristian, who had lost his memory and been programmed to believe he was someone else. When Jessica continued to receive threatening notes, Antonio reaffirmed his commitment to protect her from the mysterious stalker. What Antonio didn't know was that Jessica was suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and that her alter-ego was also her stalker. Tess, Jessica's other personality, was determined to break up the newly reunited Antonio and Jessica in hopes of taking over Jessica's body forever. When Antonio found himself entangled in a bitter custody battle with RJ for his daughter, Tess seized the opportunity to ruin Antonio's life. Posing as Jessica, she went to RJ's apartment to pick up Jamie, and began to snoop for information to use against Antonio. Tess inadvertently started a fire in the apartment. Luckily, Jessica reemerged and was able to save Jamie from the blaze. Antonio was frightened by the accident, especially when Jessica admitted she had no memory of going to RJ's apartment. Antonio returned his attention to winning custody of Jamie, while Jessica discovered her blackouts were a result of a split personality. In an effort to protect Antonio's bid for Jamie, Jessica decided to keep her mental illness a secret. Despite Tess's efforts to force Jessica to admonish Antonio on the witness stand, she gave a touching plea for Antonio's case. However, the judge ruled in RJ's favor, and agreed to revisit the custody case in six months. Antonio was furious, and sought comfort from Jessica. Meanwhile, Jessica learned more and more about her time moonlighting as Tess, and was stunned to learn her split personality was promiscuous. She has protected Antonio from the devastating secret, while he continues to show concern about her health. Antonio remains determined to gain custody of Jamie, and has begun to investigate RJ's finances in hopes of finding a chink in his armor.
