When Carly arrived in Port Charles, she made it a point to get close to Nurse Bobbie Jones and her husband, Dr. Tony Jones. Despite the fact that Jason Morgan was falling in love with Robin Scorpio, Carly fell into bed with him - repeatedly. Sensing tension in the Jones' marriage, Carly moved in on Tony and, much to the surprise of them both, found real love. Even after Bobbie's brother, Luke, learned Carly's true identity and threatened her, she refused to leave Port Charles - or Tony. In 1997, afraid that Tony still loved Bobbie, Carly succumbed to the drunken advances of A.J. Quartermaine and became pregnant. Carly lied to everyone and said that Jason was her baby's father. In 1998, Carly finally told Bobbie the truth -- that she was her long lost daughter "Caroline." Growing up with her adoptive parents, Carly Benson - or Caroline, as is her real name - never much liked who she was. She had been abandoned as a newborn, given up for adoption by a mother that she always assumed never wanted her and never gave her a second thought. She was wrong; Nurse Bobbie Jones thought every day about the little girl she left behind when she was a teenager on the streets. But Carly couldn't know that, just as she couldn't know how it would feel to like herself. At least, not until she fell in love with Bobbie's husband, Dr. Tony Jones. In his arms, she liked who she was - the woman he loved! When Carly arrived in Port Charles, she made it her life's work to ingratiate herself to everyone who crossed her path. Her Ms. Nice Guy routine worked wonders on everyone - except for Nurse Amy Vining. An old pro at spotting people with two faces, Amy knew from the start that there was more to General Hospital's new physical therapist than met the eye. Carly made a special point to get close to Bobbie and her husband, Tony. Unbeknownst to Bobbie, Carly was the daughter that she bore and gave up for adoption when she was a teenage prostitute some 20 years ago. With their encouragement, Carly decided to study nursing. Unfortunately, Carly wasn't a crackerjack student and to pass the entry test, she stole the exam. Carly's personal life wasn't a model one either. Even as brain-damaged Jason Morgan was falling in love with Robin Scorpio, he carried on a secret sexual relationship with Carly. At the same time, Carly was developing strong feelings for Tony. Although she had come to town intent on evening the score with her mother, she had found something special in Tony. For the first time in her life, she felt cared for. For her part, Carly made Tony, who had shut down emotionally following the death of his daughter, B.J., feel alive. In 1996, their fondness for one another gave way to passion, and they began an affair. The same day that Bobbie walked in on the lovers, her brother, Luke, discovered that Carly was the long-lost daughter that Bobbie had been searching for. To spare Bobbie any further pain, he told her that her child had died - And he told Carly to get out of Dodge. But stubborn Carly stuck it out in Port Charles, and soon, she and Tony were the talk of the town - and living together. His continued feelings for Bobbie, even after she married Stefan Cassadine, infuriated Carly, In a fit of pique, she made love with a drunken A.J. Quartermaine. Tony and Carly managed to patch things up and Carly learned that she was pregnant. The only question that remained was whether AJ or Tony was the baby's father. Carly was desperate to hang on to Tony and became concerned when A.J. started to remember events from the night they had slept together. Carly drugged A.J. to make it seem that he had fallen off the wagon. A.J. was ready to leave Port Charles permanently and check himself into a clinic, but Keesha helped him piece together the events surrounding his black out. AJ discovered Carly's deception and learned that they had slept together and that he may be the father of her baby. After further unsuccessful attempts by Carly to fool AJ about the paternity of her baby, A.J. washed his hands of her, but made it clear that he was going to have a paternity test done when her baby was born. Eventually, Tony discovered more of Carly's lies and deception and decided to break up with her and sue for sole custody of her baby. Carly learned what Tony was doing and told him that Jason was the father of the baby. Jason agreed to go along with Carly's scheme, but made it clear that he would not lie if asked about the true paternity of the baby. Carly gave birth to a baby boy and Tony learned that the baby's blood type ruled him out as the father. To the surprise of both Jason and Carly, AJ incorrectly concluded that Jason was the father of the baby. Carly then decided to leave town for a while and left Jason in charge of raising her son. While Carly was away, Jason had the baby baptized and named him Michael, after Sonny. When Carly returned to Port Charles, Bobbie was concerned that Carly was not bonding with her son and helped her bond with her baby. Bobbie's help and her emotional account of why she had given Carly up for adoption made Bobbie and Carly closer. An emotional Carly was moved to tell Bobbie that she was her daughter Caroline. Bobbie was shocked to learn that Carly had known all along that she was her daughter and how Carly had plotted to ruin her life. A livid Bobbie then cut off all ties with Carly. Virginia Benson, Carly's adoptive mother, arrived in Port Charles and was sickened when she learned about all of Carly's dirty deeds and was upset that Carly never told her about Michael. The stress of the confrontation caused Virginia to suffer a stroke and die. Carly later returned to Florida with Jason and made peace with her past and her mother's memory. When Jason and Carly returned home, Carly invited herself into his bed and tried to make love to him. Jason rejected Carly and made it clear that he was still in love with Robin and only wanted to remain friends with Carly. The rift between Bobbie and Carly quickly closed when Michael was kidnapped by Tony. The two rekindled their bond and Bobbie stood by Carly during Tony's kidnapping trial. When Tony got off virtually scott-free for his crimes, an emotional Carly shot him. Even when Carly was sent away to Shadybrook Psychiatric Center for tests, Bobbie never left her daughter's side. Carly could not get beyond her love for Jason Morgan, even though it was discovered that he was not Michael's father, his brother AJ was. AJ proposed to Carly in an attempt to make her fall in love with him and prove to the Quartermaines that he could be in a successful marriage to a beautiful woman. Carly reluctantly agreed, but only to secure the life and financial security of her son Michael. Carly and AJ tried to make it work, but she was always being pulled to Jason, and AJ couldn't take it. Upset about Jason's closeness with Elizabeth Webber, Carly sought comfort in the arms of Sonny and got pregnant. After an unsuccessful attempt to seduce AJ so she could pass the baby off as his, Sonny figured out that Carly was carrying his child. He freed Carly of AJ and the Quartermaines, got her a quickie divorce, and moved her from the Quartermaine mansion to his penthouse. Sonny and Carly's happiness was shattered when Carly lost her unborn baby after falling down the stairs at the Quartermaine mansion while arguing with AJ. Sonny and Carly were both devastated by their loss. Carly and Sonny continued to grieve for their baby, but eventually bonded over their loss. Carly wanted Sonny to take revenge against AJ and came up with a plot of her own when he refused. To that end, Carly secretly took a gun to the Nurses Ball and planned on killing AJ. Sonny stopped Carly before she shot AJ, who merely laughed in the face of death. Carly was falling apart emotionally and Sonny took her and Michael to his island paradise for some relaxation. The trip worked wonders for Carly and she and Sonny became lovers again. Carly was hopeful for a future with Sonny, but became heartbroken when she overheard Sonny refer to her and Michael as being obligations. Carly wanted Sonny to be with her because he wanted to, not because he thought he had to. To that end, Carly surprised Sonny when she announced that she and Michael were moving into the brownstone. Neither Sonny nor Carly really wanted to change their living arrangement, but both were too stubborn to admit their true feelings. Carly remained at the brownstone for the time being and she and Sonny missed many opportunities to connect. During this time, Mike racked up a huge gambling debt with Sorel and turned to Carly for help. Against her own better judgment, Carly went to Sonny and asked for money claiming it was for a down payment on a house. Sonny believed Carly's story and gave her the money. A short time later, Sorel contacted Sonny and told him about Mike's debt and Sonny agreed to a meeting. Carly, however, was under the impression that Mike would be meeting with Sorel and she tipped the police as to what was going down. Carly then went to the meeting place and hid in the closet with a tape recorder. Carly was then stunned when Sonny arrived for the meeting and even more shocked when the police arrived and arrested her and Sonny! Sonny told Carly that she and Michael were moving into the penthouse immediately and although Carly wanted to move back, this wasn't how she wanted it to happen. Alexis then explained to Sonny that Carly would be the prosecutions star witness and both Alexis and Sonny knew that Carly would be a loose cannon on the stand. Sonny was then shocked when Alexis said he had to marry Carly to prevent her from testifying. Carly was stunned when Sonny announced that the only way to keep her off the witness stand was for them to get married. Jason offered Sonny an alternative to marrying Carly and said he would take her and Michael out of the country. Carly, who truly did have feelings for Sonny, realized she couldn't run away with Jason. Carly then agreed to marry Sonny, who promised they would try to make a happy home together. Carly and Sonny were then married as planned and Sonny was thrown when Jason explained that Sonny was the man Carly loved. Sonny and Carly began to warm up to each other and later shared a passionate kiss. Afraid of being rejected, however, Carly asked Sonny if they could take things slowly. Shortly thereafter, Sonny confronted Mike, who ended up hitting Sonny in a moment of fury. Sonny retreated into his own private pain and pushed Carly away. Sonny then shocked Carly when he said he was going to have their marriage annulled. Sonny and Carly continued to dance around their true feelings for one another. Slowly, Sonny and Carly started to make a real connection and when Sonny learned that Mike was missing, he allowed Carly to help him deal with his pain. Sonny learned that the charges against him had been dropped and that there wouldn't be a trial after all, but he and Carly mutually agreed to stay married. Sonny, Carly and Michael had actually formed a happy little family! Sonny and Carly were happily married and living at the penthouse with Michael. One day, Carly was grabbed by Sorel's men, but was quickly rescued by Sonny. Mob violence was once again brewing in Port Charles as Sonny found himself on the brink of a war with Sorel. Sonny had convinced Zander to testify against Sorel and it was just a matter of time before Sorel took action. At this same time, Carly became partners with Laura at Deception, thanks to Sonny. Carly and Laura clashed from day one but Carly was determined to prove herself. One of the issues creating discord between Carly and Laura was selecting the new Face of Deception. Carly thought Gia would make the perfect model but Laura was equally set on using Liz for the campaign. Sonny warned Carly that Sorel's threats were increasing but promised to always protect her. Soon thereafter, Sonny learned that Sorel was plotting to kill him. Sonny kept this news from Carly and then shocked her by announcing that he was going to Puerto Rico. Before leaving, Sonny promised Carly that he would be home in time for Christmas. Carly was beside herself with worry for Sonny and was very relieved when he returned home. Carly's happiness was shattered, however, when Sonny was shot by Sorel's men on the steps of the police department as he was escorting Alexis and Zander out of the building. Alexis told Carly that Sonny had declared his love for Carly before losing consciousness. Carly stayed by Sonny's bedside and urged him to live. Carly also told an unconscious Sonny that she loved him. Sonny made a full recovery and Carly had never been happier in her life. Sonny told Carly that he wanted to remarry her in a way that showed their true feelings for one another and she readily accepted the idea. Even though Carly and Sonny were seemingly happy together, Carly still feared for her husband's life and encouraged him to leave the mob and go into the witness protection program. When Sonny's arch enemy, Sorel held Carly and Alexis hostage in the penthouse, Zander tried to rescue them but was shot by Sorel. Sorel was injured when the bomb Sonny was wearing went off. Sonny and Carly went forward with plans to divorce. But Sonny was still concerned about Carly's safety and hired Zander to watch over her. Unaware that Sonny was paying Zander to spend time with her, Carly and Zander quickly became friends. But he continued to feel guilty for deceiving her about working for Sonny. When he told her the truth, she warned him not to tell Sonny she knew he was working for him. But Zander didn't listen, he told Sonny Carly knew, and Sonny fired him. Carly continued her burgeoning friendship with Zander, which eventually turned romantic. At one point they almost made love, but when she intimated to Zander she was doing it just to get back at Sonny for sleeping with Alexis, Zander pushed her away. Hurt and angry, Carly ran out of the apartment and ended up driving over a cliff. Everyone believed her to be dead, but she proved them wrong when she showed up alive at her own funeral. Sonny was relieved to have her back in his life. But their reunion was short lived when they found out Alexis was pregnant, possibly with Sonny's baby. Sonny took a paternity test, but because Ned switched the tests, the results showed Ned to be the father. Carly needed a new project, so Sonny bought her a nightclub to run, The Cellar. Ric Lansing was sniffing around Sonny and wanted to prove that he was worthy of working for him. So Sonny stuck Ric Lansing on Carly's new club and they began working together. A presumed dead Brenda Barrett came back into town and surprised everyone that she was in fact alive. When Carly caught Sonny kissing his long lost love, she fled and got drunk, waking up the next morning naked in bed with Ric. Thinking they had slept together, Carly freaked out. Not soon after Carly found out she was pregnant. Thinking the father could be Ric, Carly could not keep the truth from Sonny any longer. She confessed to Sonny that Ric had taken advantage of her while she was drunk. It was then that Ric told Sonny his real motivation, he was Sonny's half brother wanting to seek revenge on him from when they were kids. On Courtney and Jason's wedding day, Ric kidnapped Carly and stuck her in a panic room in his new house. Believing that Sonny was responsible for Liz losing her baby, he planned to steal Carly and Sonny's baby. Carly was then taken by Ric's partner Lorenzo Alcazar who quickly took a liking to Carly. Unharmed Carly finally returned to Sonny. Alcazar became obsessed with Carly and began courting her. He even hatched a plan to hire a woman to resemble Sonny's dead first wife Lily, to make Sonny crazy. Lily programmed Sonny to believe Carly and the kids would be safer without Sonny in their lives. So Sonny bought Carly a house on the outskirts of town for her to live. One night while Carly was in the house alone, she fell down the stairs and went into labor. Luckily Alcazar found her and helped her to deliver her baby. But when Sonny barged in and found Alcazar with Carly, Sonny shot him, and then soon realized the bullet had passed through to Carly. Carly was in a coma for weeks dreaming of an alternate life Alcazar. When Carly finally woke from the coma she immediately asked for Alcazar. Sonny was hurt by this, but was just happy his wife alive. Unfortunately even though Carly was physically out of the woods, she no longer had memory of her love for Sonny and her family. She tried to fake her feelings, but Sonny saw through it. Carly told Sonny about her problem and Sonny took off to confront Alcazar. Scared for Alcazar's life, she called to warn him Sonny was coming for Alcazar. Carly then went to Alcazar and got there in time to see Sonny shoot Alcazar and take a driver, Sam McCall hostage. Carly was scared for Sonny so they ran away to France, but Sonny couldn't stay gone forever, he wanted to turn himself in. Sonny was put on trial and found guilty. When Carly confronted Alcazar, she collapsed and when she woke up her memory of her love for Sonny and the kids returned. But it was not soon after that Carly started having thoughts and flashes of her alternate life with Alcazar that she dreamt about while in the coma. She felt drawn to Alcazar and could not control her urges to be with him. When Carly told Sonny about her uncontrollable feelings for Alcazar, he became extremely jealous. When Sonny was out of town, she checked herself into a mental hospital hoping to cure her feelings for him. But when she came back, she found out that Sonny was going to go after Alcazar. She felt compelled to warn him. When Sonny found out where Carly went, he assumed she slept with Alcazar. So, when he ran into Sam McCall on the docks, he retaliated against Carly and slept with Sam. Carly went to find Sonny and walked in on him and Sam in bed together. She immediately went straight to Alcazar and they made love. Sonny and Carly were as far apart as they have ever been. Although Sonny never promised Sam anything, she began to have strong romantic feelings towards him. And Carly continued to feel torn between her feelings for Alcazar and her love for Sonny. The night of the Port Charles Hotel fire, Carly got stuck in an elevator with Alexis Davis. Fearing death, Alexis revealed that Kristina is in fact Sonny's biological child. When they both survived the fire, Carly decided to keep the secret to herself, choosing not to tell Sonny. After the fire, Carly agreed to move back into the penthouse for the sake of Morgan and Michael. She and Sonny were also hoping to begin reconciliation. But unfortunately this was put on hold when Sonny found out Sam was pregnant with his child. To protect Sonny's family, Jason offered to claim the child as his own. Sonny reluctantly agreed and Sam moved into Jason's penthouse. Of course Carly was not completely fooled, she continued to suspect that Sam was carrying Sonny's child. Eventually Sonny knew he had to tell Carly the truth if they were ever to continue their marriage. After a lot of thought, Carly decided to forgive Sonny and they finally made love. Even though Carly and Sonny have reunited and are dealing with Sam's pregnancy, Carly has some secrets of her own that need confessing. Carly tells Sonny that John Durant is her father. This doesn't sit well with Sonny but he allows Carly to pursue a relationship with her father. Carly then reveals another bombshell: Kristina is Sonny's daughter (in the hopes that he can be a bone marrow donor). Sonny can't believe Carly lied to him and he decides their marriage is over. Durant doesn't want Sonny anywhere near Carly or Michael so he purchases Carly's old cottage for her to move into. While packing, Durant finds some damaging evidence that he uses to get Sonny and Jason arrested. Carly breaks into Ric's apartment (where the evidence is being kept) and sets the place on fire, but gets trapped. Steven Webber rescues her. Steven eventually tells Carly the truth about her father, that he's using her to destroy Sonny. When Durant catches Carly trying to tape him, he calls her on it. Carly explodes and knows he's using her. At Kristina's custody trial, Carly testifies on Sonny's behalf. When Durant admits the damaging evidence against Sonny and Jason was obtained illegally, the charges against them are dropped. Carly thanks her father but cuts all ties with him for his betrayal. Carly starts to spend more time with Steven. One night, after several hot toddies, they almost kiss. But Durant interrupts them. Durant wants Steven to back off his daughter. They are fighting when the roof of Carly's cottage comes crashing down. Durant and Steven have to work together to save Carly. Soon after this, Steven admits to Carly that he's been working for Durant all along, but he is starting to develop real feelings for her. Sonny and Carly continue to have their flirtations, but Sonny makes it clear that they can never be together. The time for a divorce has come. Michael has a hard time accepting the breakup. He calls Carly over to the house several times in the hopes that the adults can make up. Carly spends some quality time with Alcazar while they are trapped in an elevator. Alcazar opens up, and admits his true feelings to Carly. Carly finds out that Durant is now after Alcazar and that Steven has evidence from Mary's murder that could incriminate Alcazar. Durant has both Alcazar and Steven arrested. Ric wants the evidence re-tested. Steven tips Carly off about this and she is able to switch the results. Alcazar is freed and thanks Carly with a big kiss. Carly backs away from Alcazar's advances, makes it clear she can't go there again with him. Alcazar promises to never to give up on her. Carly continues to fight her attraction to Alcazar. Carly takes it upon herself to try to fix Alcazar and Diego's father/son relationship. Sonny decides to take a vacation with the kids while his new home is being set up. But someone has stolen keys to the new place and compromised the security system. All of Sonny's children are kidnapped. Durant calls in Reese Marshall, a FBI agent who specializes in kidnapping, to help find the kids. Sonny messes up the ransom drop but finds out Faith is the one behind the kidnapping. Jason and Sam find clues that lead them to Louisiana. After a shootout with Faith, Sonny eventually gets Kristina and Morgan back, but Michael is still missing. Jason and Sam start looking into Faith's activities and find out she had something going in the Caribbean. Sonny is working with Reese to try to figure out who Faith's mystery partner is. But before they can go any further, Faith is shot and killed. Jason and Sonny track down the sniper and find a Polaroid of Michael, dead. Carly can't believe her child is dead. Carly eventually turns to Alcazar for comfort. While at the dedication of the new park, Carly starts to see visions of Michael. Carly thinks she must be going crazy but the visions keep appearing. She shares this with Reese who reveals she had visions of her own child after his death. Carly suspects there is something more to her visions than just grief. . She tells both Sonny and Alcazar about the visions. Sonny tells her they aren't real and shuts down. Alcazar, on the other hand, is much more understanding. Carly is starting to believe her son is still alive. Carly tells Sam this and Sam tells Carly what she and Jason have been up to. Sam tells Carly that she and Jason have proof Michael is still alive, and someone in Port Charles was Faith's partner. Jason suspects Alcazar. Carly tests Alcazar but he figures out what she's up to. Carly makes it clear to Jason that Alcazar wasn't Faith's partner. When Courtney tells Jason and Carly about AJ being alive, they realize that is where Michael is. Jason and Sam take off to the Bahamas while Carly goes to tell Sonny the good news. Carly walks in on Reese and Sonny in a rather compromising situation. When Sonny catches up with Carly, she tells him about Michael. Carly goes to the park and sees Michael for real (as does Alcazar). When she tries to talk to him, Michael runs away. Carly starts to follow but AJ shows up with a gun. When everyone gets word that AJ is at the Quatermaine estate with Michael, all rush over. While Jason deals with AJ, Sonny and Carly try to reach out to a very confused Michael. Michael runs away from them. They catch up with him in the house as Jason and AJ fall over the staircase railing. Michael is very confused over the recent traumatic events. Reese is able to make progress with Michael and Sonny is very thankful for that. AJ is murdered and everyone becomes a suspect. Carly is subsequently arrested when Michael reveals he saw her kill AJ. Eventually Michael realizes that he killed AJ. Sonny does what he is necessary to protect his son, and claims he killed AJ. With Sonny's background, the trial doesn't seem to be going in his favor until Ric makes a summation supporting Sonny. Sonny is ultimately found not guilty. Sonny attends Courtney and Jax's wedding with Reese which doesn't sit well with Carly. Carly admits to Alcazar that she's over Sonny and wants to marry Alcazar. Alcazar actually turns Carly down. After a talk with Skye, Alcazar tells Carly he loves her and wants to marry her. When Carly decides she wants to elope, she wants to take her kids to the wedding. Michael throws a huge tantrum over this. Carly fears she can't marry Alcazar right now. Carly has a talk with Michael's psychiatrist, Dr. Thomas, who makes it clear to her that Michael shouldn't be allowed to run her life. Carly decides she has to marry Alcazar now. When Carly and Alcazar return from their wedding in South America, they go to Sonny's place to tell Michael the good news. Michael isn't happy for his mom and wants to stay with Sonny. Alcazar buys Carly a new home. When Carly has Michael over to show him where he'll be living from now on, Michael blows up and blames her for her and Sonny's failed marriage. Carly continues to have serious doubts about Reese and her new relationship with Sonny and Michael. When Durant is shot again, Carly goes to see him at General Hospital, and finds Reese there. When Durant decides to sue GH and Bobbie for his botched surgery, Reese is Bobbie's new lawyer. When Sonny offers his penthouse to Reese, that is the final straw. During a cocktail party, Carly sneaks off and breaks into Reese's apartment. Jason catches her rummaging through Reese's things. Before he can get her out, Sonny and Reese come home. Jason and Carly are stuck while Sonny and Reese fool around in the living room. Once they go upstairs, Jason gets Carly out and tells her to behave. Alcazar figures out where his wife was and busts her on her behavior. Carly just can't help herself and breaks into Reese's new place. She ends up knocking Reese out and stealing a lockbox. Jason shows up at Alcazar's place and accuses Carly of knocking Reese out. Carly lies and Alcazar believes his wife. Alcazar surprises Carly with news that she will take over as the Head of Charitable Endowments at GH. Once Alcazar is gone, Carly goes to work on the lockbox but jams it up. Reese shows up and calls Carly's bluff by giving her the key to open the box. Reese takes her box back. Carly decides to throw a charity fundraiser. She's shocked when Sonny shows up with Reese as his date. She's even more shocked to see they are wearing matching dresses. The ladies exchange words and Reese dumps a drink on Carly. Sonny and Carly have a talk and agree to try to get along for Michael's sake. Carly is ready for them to leave but a hurricane has hit Port Charles.
